Creating a cozy home doesn’t have to break the bank or harm the environment. With a little creativity and some thrifting know-how, you can transform forgotten items into stunning cozy home decor pieces that will make your space feel uniquely warm and inviting! Today I’m sharing seven amazing upcycling projects that will add character, comfort, and sustainable style to your home. (Plus, these are all super fun to make!)

Why Upcycled Cozy Home Decor?
Before diving into these unique projects, let’s talk about why upcycled cozy home decor is worth your time:
- Sustainability: Giving new life to old items reduces waste and your carbon footprint
- Uniqueness: Each piece tells a story and can’t be replicated from big box stores
- Budget-friendly: Transform affordable thrift finds into high-end looking decor
- Customization: Tailor each project to perfectly match your home’s aesthetic
I’ve been loving finding thrifted, secondhand, or even trashed items and giving them a new life. It’s such a great way to decorate your home on a budget while being eco-conscious! My daughters have been enjoying upcycling too, and it’s such a fun challenge for the whole family.
Now let’s get crafting with these seven fun cozy home decor projects!
1. Thrifted Spoon Rack Turned Chic Entryway Organizer

Remember those wooden spoon racks from the ’80s and ’90s? They’re thrift store staples that can be reimagined into stylish and functional entryway organizers!
Materials You’ll Need:
- Thrifted spoon rack
- Mild soap and water for cleaning
- Dusty rose spray paint
- Scrap fabric
- Mod Podge
- Scissors
- Drill
- Cup hooks
- Drawer pull
- E6000 adhesive
- Command picture hanging strip
Instructions:
- First, clean and sand the spoon rack as needed.
- Then, apply a coat of spray paint in your favourite colour.
- Cut fabric to fit in between the racks. Apply it to the spoon rack with Mod Podge, then seal with another layer of Mod Podge.
- Once dry, install cup hooks on the bottom rack (I used 5 hooks).
- Attach a drawer pull with adhesive to the top of the bottom rack to use as a mail holder.
- Finally, mount the organizer to a wall with Command Hooks. Enjoy!
Styling Tips: Use your new organizer to hold keys, mail, sunglasses, or even jewelry! The transformation creates a practical piece of cozy home decor that welcomes you home each day.
2. DIY Wood Stand from Scrap Lumber (Primitive Wooden Riser)

Elevate (literally!) your cozy home decor with this simple yet versatile wooden risers. It adds height, visual interest, and a touch of rustic charm to any vignette.
Materials You’ll Need:
- Approximately 16 inches of 8×1″ lumber (salvaged or new wood; the lumber size doesn’t have to be exact)
- Wood glue
- Miter saw
- Measuring tape
- Finishing nail gun
- Brad nails
- Bleach solution
- Nylon scrub brush
- Wood stain
Instructions:
- Clean your salvaged wood pieces carefully with bleach and a nylon brush.
- Then, cut one piece of lumber to be 12 inches long, and two more pieces to be 2 inches long.
- Using wood glue, carefully attach the shorter pieces to either side of the bottom of the long piece, positioning them about 1 inch from the edges.
- Next, reinforce the joints by driving finishing nails through the smaller pieces and into the longer one.
- Finally, stain the cut ends of the lumber with wood stain that closely matches the lumber’s colour.
Styling Tips: Use your wooden riser to elevate candles, plants, or decorative objects. It’s perfect for creating layered cozy home decor displays on coffee tables, shelves, or mantels. You can even use it in the kitchen to showcase special ingredients or cookbooks!
3. Make a DIY Wall Sconce Cover from Thrifted Pants

This might be the most unconventional cozy home decor project on the list, but trust me—the results are stunning! These wall sconces look beautiful in a living room or dining room.
Materials You’ll Need:
- Thrifted pants (preferably stretchy fabric)
- Scissors
- Glue gun and glue sticks
- Wall sconces (I’m using these black & white wall sconces from Amazon)
- Battery-operated bulbs
- Optional: Fabric marker or trim for embellishment
Instructions:
- Find a pair of thrifted pants that match your desired style. I used stretchy gingham pants to achieve that cozy cottagecore vibe. Ensure the legs of the pants are around the same diameter as your wall sconce lampshades.
- Then, lay the pants flat on a clean surface and use your scissors to cut off the bottom of each pant leg (make the height a couple inches taller than your wall sconce shade).
- Pull the pant leg piece over the wall sconce shade.
- Apply hot glue along the edge of the fabric and press it firmly onto the inside top of the lampshade. Work your way around, smoothing out any wrinkles or creases as you go.
- For the bottom, fold the pant leg over to the inside once and glue. Then fold it again, and glue it into the bottom inside of the lampshade.
- Then, use the appropriate hardware to securely mount the sconces to the wall.
- Finally, insert a battery-operated light bulb into each of your sconces and admire your handiwork!
Safety Note: Always ensure fabric is not touching the bulb directly. Use LED bulbs which generate less heat for this project.
Styling Tips: The soft, diffused light creates an instantly cozy atmosphere. These fabric-covered sconces add textural interest and warmth to bedrooms, hallways, or living spaces—the epitome of cozy home decor that transforms the mood of any room.
4. DIY Dried Flower Art from an Old Picture Frame

Preserve the beauty of nature and create sophisticated wall art with this cozy home decor project that brings organic elements indoors.
Materials You’ll Need:
- Old picture frame (I used an 8×10 frame with a white mat)
- Dried flowers and foliage
- Jute cord
- Scissors
Instructions:
- Begin by cleaning the frame and glass thoroughly
- Take the backing, glass/plastic, and mat out of the frame. If you don’t like the colour of the backing, you could glue on some coloured cardstock or linen fabric.
- Next, wrap some jute twine around the backing about 20 times. You can use a piece of tape or small amount of hot glue to secure the beginning of the twine to the back of the backing.
- Tie the end of the twine to the beginning of the twine at the back. Make sure it’s nice and snug against the cardboard backing.
- Then, reassemble the frame by placing the mat back inside, and then the twine-wrapped backing.
- Now, start to weave dried flower stems from the top to the bottom of the twine pieces. I used a few different types of dried florals including lavender, bunny tails, star flowers and pampas grass. Trim the stems to fit the frame as needed.
- Finally, hang your flower artwork and enjoy it!
Styling Tips: Create a gallery wall of various sized frames with different dried botanical arrangements for a cohesive cozy home decor feature. These pieces add natural elements that ground a space and connect your indoor environment with the outdoors—a key element of truly cozy design.
5. DIY Thrift Store Candle using a Kitchen Canister

Transform a vintage kitchen canister into a statement candle that adds both light and character to your cozy home decor collection.
Materials You’ll Need:
- Thrifted ceramic, porcelain, or metal canister with lid (heat safe)
- Candle wax (soy or beeswax recommended)
- Candle wick
- Essential oils or candle fragrance (optional)
- Double boiler or heat-safe bowl and pot
- Hot glue gun
Instructions:
- First, clean and dry your canister thoroughly.
- Next, use hot glue to secure the wick sustainer to the bottom center of the canister.
- Then, melt wax using a double boiler method to approximately 180°F.
- Remove from heat and add fragrance if desired (follow manufacturer’s recommendations for amount).
- After that, allow the wax to cool slightly to about 140°F.
- Pour the wax carefully into your canister, holding the wick centered.
- Allow to cool completely (several hours to overnight).
- Finally, trim wick to about 1/4 inch before lighting and enjoy!
Styling Tips: When not lit, these candles serve as beautiful decorative objects that complement other cozy home decor elements. Choose canisters with interesting patterns or colors that enhance your existing palette. The canister lid can be used when the candle isn’t burning to keep dust out and maintain the vintage aesthetic.
6. How to Make a DIY Centerpiece from a Thrifted Wooden Bowl

A stunning centerpiece anchors your dining area and creates a focal point for gatherings. This versatile cozy home decor project evolves with the seasons.
Materials You’ll Need:
- Large wooden bowl from the thrift store
- Cleaner & rag
- Imitation gold leaf
- Mod Podge
- Small cake stand to fit in bowl
- Battery operated pillar candles of varying heights
- Battery operated string lights (optional)
- Faux greenery stems (optional)
Instructions:
- Sand the thrifted bowl to give it a matte finish and get rid of any stains.
- Wipe the bowl clean with a degreasing cleaner and a rag.
- Brush Mod Podge along the rim of the bowl, and press on imitation gold leaf.
- Once the Mod Podge has dried, brush off the excess gold leaf with a stiff brush.
- Insert the cake stand inside the bowl.
- Add battery operated pillar candles onto the cake stand.
- Wrap twinkle lights around the candles (optional).
- You can also add faux greenery instead of twinkle lights if desired.
Styling Tips: Change your centerpiece elements seasonally to keep your cozy home decor fresh and timely. For everyday use, consider filling with items that reflect your personal style—collected stones, vintage wooden spools, or artisan ceramic pieces. This centerpiece becomes a conversation starter and an expression of your unique aesthetic.
7. Cozy, Scandi-Inspired DIY Faux Fur Stool Upcycle

Nothing says cozy home decor quite like a plush faux fur accent. This Scandinavian-inspired stool makeover creates a hygge-perfect seating option or footrest.
Materials You’ll Need:
- Plain wooden counter-height stool (check garage sales, thrift stores, or discount stores)
- Painters’ tape
- White-wash ( 1 part latex paint and 1 part water)
- Faux fur fabric
- Hand or power saw
- Hand or power sander
- Paint brush
- Towel
- Staple gun
Instructions:
- Mark your stool legs at about 14″ from the base of the stool top.
- Cut the stool legs at this mark with a hand saw or power saw.
- After cutting, sand the bottom of the stool legs with a hand or power sander.
- Now, sand the entire stool.
- Paint the stool with your white-wash. Brush it on the stool, and then wipe it off with a towel to create an aged look.
- Next, remove any old upholster from the top of the stool and keep the foam.
- Trace the top of the stool onto some faux fur fabric, add about 2″ to the circle, and cut.
- Now, place the faux fur fabric on a flat surface, then the foam, and then the stool. Using a staple gun, wrap the faux fur fabric around to the bottom of the stool and staple it in place.
Styling Tips: Place your faux fur stool near a reading nook, fireplace, or bedroom corner to add texture and an invitation to get comfortable.

More Ways to Make Your Home Feel Cozy on a Budget
Beyond DIY projects, there are many affordable ways to enhance your cozy home decor game. Here are some key elements that design experts consistently recommend for creating warm, inviting spaces without breaking the bank:
Main Elements
- Sofas: As the centerpiece of most interiors, make your sofa extra inviting with the right combination of throw pillows and blankets. Even a budget-friendly sofa can feel luxurious with the right accessories.
- Area Rug: A well-chosen fluffy rug instantly grounds a space and adds warmth underfoot. Look for natural fibers or plush textures that invite bare feet.
Accessories
- Throw Pillows: Perhaps the most versatile and budget-friendly way to refresh your cozy home decor. Mix textures, patterns, and sizes for a collected, comfortable look with plush pillows.
- Blankets: Drape them over sofas, chairs, or the foot of your bed for instant coziness. Chunky knits, soft fleece, or vintage quilts all contribute to that wrapped-in-comfort feeling.
- Baskets: The perfect marriage of style and function, baskets corral clutter while adding natural texture. Use them for storing blankets, magazines, toys, or as planters for a cohesive cozy home decor solution.
- Storage: Incorporate other beautiful storage solutions that hide visual clutter while contributing to your aesthetic. Pretty boxes, vintage trunks, or floating shelves can maintain order while enhancing your cozy home decor.
- Vases: A simple vase filled with fresh flowers, branches, or dried botanicals brings life to any space. Thrift stores are treasure troves for unique vessels that add character.
- Lamps: Swap harsh overhead lights for the warm glow of strategically placed table lamps and floor lamps. This simple change to warm lighting transforms the mood of a room!
- Cozy Textures: Incorporate a variety of textures through natural materials, textiles, and surfaces. The juxtaposition of smooth, rough, soft, and nubby cozy textures creates visual and tactile interest.
- Tabletop decor: Don’t neglect bedroom coziness. A well-styled nightstand with a soft lamp, a small vase of flowers, and perhaps a candle creates a cozy feel that invites you to relax.
