If you’ve been dreaming about giving your outdoor space a little glow-up without spending a ton, you’re going to love these examples of easy and low-budget DIY garden decor ideas! I’ve gathered up a little something for everyone: whimsical fairy gardens, charming birdhouses, glowing water features, and cozy backyard retreats.
Whether you’ve got a sprawling backyard, a small patio, or just a few planters on a balcony, there’s something here to inspire every kind of garden lover. Most of these ideas use simple materials (often leftovers!), thrift store treasures, or dollar store finds, and each one comes with a full tutorial so you can make it your own.

Ready to turn your garden dreams into reality? These are some of my favourite low-budget DIY garden decor projects that are just as fun to create as they are to show off!
Growing up, I spent so many afternoons in the garden with my mom. I planted flowers, picked weeds (not always willingly!), and learned how to care for little growing things. It wasn’t anything fancy, just a few beds of perennials, some herbs, and whatever veggies we decided to try that year.
That time outdoors shaped so much of who I am now. There’s something grounding about getting your hands in the dirt and watching things grow. It’s also one of the biggest reasons we chose to move to an acreage to raise our girls. I wanted them to have that same connection with the outdoors—run barefoot in the grass, plant seeds in spring. I also wanted them to know where their food and flowers come from.

Our garden has become one of our favourite places to spend time as a family. It’s not perfect (the weeds still win sometimes!), but it’s full of life and learning. My goal has always been to keep it low-maintenance—I didn’t want something I’d have to work at all summer. But I do love switching up the decor each year to keep things feeling fresh.
I include my girls in as many low budget DIY garden decor projects as I can—painting garden markers, planting herbs, building fairy gardens—so they always see their handiwork around the yard. I hope those little moments grow into memories they’ll carry forever.
Let’s take a look at our favourite garden goodies!

Rustic Birdhouse Garden Stands
If you’re dreaming of a cute little garden makeover, this rustic birdhouse garden decor idea is one of my favourite budget-friendly DIY projects! I grabbed some birdhouses and odds and ends from the dollar store. Then I gave them a cozy, weathered look with just a bit of paint and some easy distressing.
Then, I tucked these sweet little birdhouses into our garden beds alongside other potted plants. I love how they give the whole area a whimsical, cottage-y vibe. You could also place them near your potting bench. They would look great styled on the porch with some cushions, a lantern, and string lights for extra magic.

This project is a good reminder that you don’t need fancy supplies or a huge budget to create something unique and meaningful in your garden. A few thrift store or dollar store finds and a bit of creativity can go a long way! Plus, birdhouses are a wonderful way to welcome a few feathered friends to your backyard.

Painted Rock Garden Markers
These painted rock garden markers are the ultimate low budget DIY garden decor project. They are super simple, fun, and totally free! I made them with my girls using some smooth river rocks, a bit of paint, and a fine-tip marker. They turned out so cute. These little markers are perfect for labelling herbs like thyme and basil in your vegetable garden. They also add a playful pop of colour to your flower beds or garden beds.
What I love about this project is how easy it is to customize. You can use whatever colours and designs you like—stencils, hand lettering, or even little doodles. It’s such a great way to make your outdoor space feel more personal! And who doesn’t love a fun craft to do with kids on a sunny afternoon?

These painted rocks look adorable tucked into pots or planters or right along the edge of pathways. I’ve even seen smaller versions turned into cute little garden snakes! They’re also a great addition to balconies where you’re short on space but still want those pretty little garden touches.
And don’t worry—this project doesn’t require any fancy tools or skills. Just gather your supplies, give the rocks a quick clean, and start painting! I always recommend sealing them with a clear coat to help them last through the seasons.
Go ahead! Make your outdoor area feel extra adorable this summer!

DIY Solar Water Fountain Planter
Want to add a water feature to your garden without plumbing or a big setup? This easy DIY solar water fountain planter is the one for you! I combined a few budget-friendly items: a large planter, a smaller planter and a small solar-powered fountain are all that are needed. Then you can create a super simple water feature that brings the loveliest, calming sound to your outdoor space.
This is a great way to turn a regular pot into something really eye-catching. The best part is that it runs completely on solar power—no cords, no fuss! You just drop the fountain in, fill the planter with water, and let the sun do its thing. I added a few petunias and some lobelia around the base. But you can totally customize it to match your patio or deck setup. I think succulents and moss would also look amazing!

It’s perfect for a corner of your backyard, porch, or even a balcony if you’re working with a small garden area. And I love that it adds a peaceful vibe and even attracts a few curious birds and critters.
This DIY project is also an awesome way to repurpose a planter or barrel you already have lying around. Just make sure your container doesn’t have drainage holes (or seal them up!) so it holds water properly.
This little fountain is the perfect way to add a bit of movement and sound to your garden!

DIY Fairy Garden Ideas
If you love adding a little charm and whimsy to your garden like I do, these 5 DIY fairy garden ideas are such a fun way to do it. These are cute if you’re working with a small garden space or just want a magical corner of your backyard. You can use baskets, pots, or even a wooden crate to make these tiny treasures come together. Then, add in a mix of your favourite plants, miniatures, and simple craft supplies.
I had so much fun putting these together! And, you can get super creative with the pieces. Moss, beads, painted stones, and even repurposed thrift store finds work for a truly low budget DIY garden decor project. It’s a great DIY project for kids too, or just something relaxing to do on a weekend afternoon.

There are no rules to building a fairy garden! Use what you have—little planters, bowls, or even a barrel—and create your own little world. They make your outdoor area feel playful and unique, especially when you need a great conversation starter at a backyard party.
If you’re looking for cheap garden ideas that are also impactful, then fairy gardens are such a fun way to go. Plus, they’re an easy way to add instant colour and life to shaded spots or smaller corners of your yard where nothing grows. Except maybe a little mischief!

Beautiful Low-Maintenance Flower Bed
If you’re anything like me, you want your garden to look beautiful without spending hours every week maintaining it. This low-maintenance flower bed idea might be just what you need! I put this one together with a mix of hardy perennials and shrubs. I then added mulch to keep things looking tidy and fresh with minimal effort. It’s perfect for busy families or anyone who wants a gorgeous garden without the constant upkeep.
I come by my green thumb honestly. My great-grandfather was a master gardener in Germany, and my grandmother used to grow potatoes in her front yard! So while I love a lush garden, I’ve also learned the value of planting choices that work with your lifestyle. Not against it.

In this post, I walk you through how I chose my plants, prepped the space, and added mulch and edging to keep everything looking clean and contained. I also share some of my favourite tips for choosing plants that not only thrive with little fuss but also support pollinators and local wildlife. It’s also important to know which zone you’re in so you can choose plants that will thrive in your climate. This matters not just in summer, but through the winter, too. Don’t know your zone? No problem—I’ll help you figure it out!
This flower bed looks beautiful alongside a patio, near your front porch, or even as part of a larger backyard layout. You could even add a few details like a candle lantern, garden decor, or some thrift store planters to personalize it even more.
This kind of project is totally doable and super satisfying. With just a few easy steps and a bit of planning, your garden dreams can bloom!

Watering Can Light Feature
This DIY faux enamelware watering can light feature might be my favourite way to add a little magic to the garden, especially in the evening! I took an old watering can, gave it a faux enamelware makeover with some simple paint techniques, and then added string lights to create a gorgeous, glowing feature for our outdoor space. The soft twinkle of the lights spilling out of the spout looks so dreamy at night, especially if you’re entertaining outdoors or just enjoying a quiet moment in your backyard.
I love how this project combines both function and decor—it’s pretty during the day and a sparkly surprise once the sun goes down. And it’s also a great way to repurpose something you might already have on hand or score secondhand from a friend, neighbour, or thrift store. You could even get creative with the finish and use stencils to add extra detail if that’s your style!

This would also look adorable next to a potting bench, hanging from a shepherd’s hook, or set among your potted plants and garden beds. Whether you’ve got a big yard or a tiny balcony, a little glow goes a long way in creating that cozy garden vibe.

Tiered Herb Planter
Looking for a simple, budget-friendly way to grow your own herbs? This tiered herb planter made from dollar store buckets is a total win. I put this together using three metal buckets from Dollarama, some potting soil, and my favourite herbs like rosemary, basil, and mint. The best part? It cost less than $15 to make!
This one’s a bit of a two-for-one: it’s decorative and functional. It adds a super charming touch to your outdoor space while giving you fresh herbs all season long. You can pop it on your porch, tuck it into a garden bed, or set it on your deck—it’s a great way to grow something green without taking up a tonne of space.
I’ve made a version of this every year, and it’s become one of my go-to small garden ideas. If you’re into vertical gardens or looking for unique planters that don’t cost a fortune, this one’s definitely worth a try. It’s also a fun DIY project to do with the kids—they love checking in on “their” plants!

Secret Garden Swing Retreat
Creating this little secret garden swing retreat was such a dream come true for me! I wanted a cozy spot in our backyard where I could relax, sip a cup of coffee, watch my daughters play, or read a book while surrounded by greenery and flowers. And this tucked-away corner in the shade came together so beautifully with just a few simple touches and budget-friendly ideas—and Sean, of course!
We started by building a gravel base and adding pavers for a stable foundation, then anchored the whole area with a classic wooden swing from The Brick. From there, I added comfy cushions and a few plants from my parents, including hostas, ferns, and bleeding hearts—all plants that LOVE the shade!

This project was a great reminder that you don’t need a huge yard or fancy materials to create something special. You could absolutely recreate this vibe on a patio, too, with a cozy chair, some unique planters with colourful potted plants nearby, and maybe a few lanterns or candles to set the mood.
It’s become one of my favourite places to unwind. Also, it’s proof that with a few thoughtful elements, you can turn any corner of your garden into a dreamy little retreat.
I hope these ideas sparked a little inspiration for your own garden projects this season! Whether you try one or all of them, the goal is to have fun, get creative, and make your outdoor space feel a little more you. Now, I’d love to see how your garden DIYs turn out.
