10 Low Effort, Big Impact Home Decor Tips to Try This Year!

Let’s be honest—we’ve all drooled over perfectly styled Instagram homes and Pinterest boards, thinking, “Maybe one day.” For seven years, my husband Sean and I lived in a renovated garage, making do with hand-me-downs and functional (but not exactly stylish) furnishings.

When Sean built our dream home, I was thrilled—but quickly overwhelmed. We finally had real rooms to decorate, yet six months in, a friend asked if we had just moved in. That was my wake-up call.

Hiring a designer wasn’t in the budget, so I dove into interior design ideas, learning how thoughtful changes could transform a space. These simple updates helped turn our house into a home—and sparked my love for interior design. The transition from garage-dwellers to living in a thoughtfully decorated home has been incredible, and I want to share what I’ve learned along the way. Keep reading for some helpful (and easy!) home decor tips!

1. Rethink Your Lighting

Confession: we lived with the world’s ugliest boob-shaped ceiling lights for years because I thought changing light fixtures was hard. Turns out, swapping basic fixtures is surprisingly simple! When we finally replaced those monstrosities with modern pendants, our kids’ bedrooms went from boring to amazing.

A home decor tip is adding floor lamps to a living room adding to the cozy ambiance.

Here is an even easier home lighting decor tip. I added strategic floor lamps and table lamps to dark corners, and suddenly my home had this magical ambiance. Different light sources at varying heights added depth and visual interest to our rooms. My power move now is using smart bulbs that I can dim or change colours using my phone. Having friends over? Warm, golden light. Need to work? Bright, cool light. It’s like having multiple spaces in one without moving any furniture!

An easy home decor tip is to keep your furniture neutral and add colourful throw pillows and blankets.

2. Introduce Statement Textiles

I used to think throw pillows were pointless dust collectors until I started making them myself and realized how they can completely update a space. Now I’m a convert! My current hack is keeping a neutral color scheme for larger pieces like the couch, but swapping pillows and throws seasonally—rich velvets and warm shades in winter, lighter linens in summer. You can find my favourite DIY throw pillow tutorials here!

My proudest textile moment? Creating a whole line of natural fiber bedding and cushion covers in 2024! My brand is called Cozy Prairie Linens Co. and you can find it right here. My love for textiles has obviously grown into something huge!

3. Curate Your Shelves

When we moved from our garage to the new house, I finally had a home office I could use as a quiet space to work on my blog and YouTube channel. But for years, it remained a jumbled mess of books and random accessories we’d accumulated over seven years of garage living. The day I finally made over my little office and created a floating bookshelf over my desk was life-changing! By layering textures and mixing decorative accents like vases and small trinkets, my shelves became a statement instead of just storage. They were now the heart and soul of my office!

My trick? I saved Pinterest Pins of arrangements I liked and then tried to recreate the balance. Also, leaving some empty space was crucial to achieving the right effect! This was genuinely hard for my maximalist heart, but breathing room makes everything look so much more expensive and purposeful.

4. Experience the Power of Paint

You don’t have to paint the whole house with a new paint colour to change your space. For example, I painted my front door a deep green with leftover paint (Behr Black Evergreen). It took exactly one afternoon, cost under $30, and literally makes me happy every time I come home.

Refresh your old home decor with a painted IKEA dresser and new hardware.

When I don’t want to paint walls, I paint inexpensive furniture instead. My old IKEA sideboard went from drab brown to a stunning spring green, and suddenly it’s the piece everyone comments on! Just remember: sand lightly, use a bonding primer, and don’t skip those steps like I did the first time (lesson painfully learned). Here’s how I paint IKEA furniture that lasts!

Another related easy home decor tip? An accent wall! A single bold shade or even a fun wallpaper pattern instantly transforms a space. And, if you want a smaller project, painting switch plates or outlet covers in a coordinating color palette makes your whole room feel intentional and polished.

5. Bring the Outdoors In

My next home decor tip is incorporating natural elements such as house plants. They instantly add charm and comfort to any home. After killing approximately seventeen plants in my early twenties, I’d written myself off as botanically challenged. Then I discovered snake plants: nearly impossible to kill and beautiful too. Starting with just one success gave me the confidence to try others.

Home decor tips include hanging a swag of dried eucalyptus from the shower head.

I also love high-quality faux plants or dried plants for a beautiful nature-inspired look that’s zero maintenance! My favourite no-fail trick? A swag of dried eucalyptus hanging from the showerhead in the bathroom—they last forever, smell amazing in the shower steam, and they’re affordable on Amazon.

6. Create Conversation Areas

The revelation that furniture doesn’t have to be pushed against walls blew my mind! When I finally floated my couch in the middle of my living room and arranged chairs facing it, suddenly people actually talked to each other when visiting instead of staring at the TV. Using smaller furniture in key spots gives flexibility and makes a room feel deliberate.

Another favourite styling trick is to create multiple “zones” that make the space feel larger and more functional. In our vacation rental, I floated a desktop between two IKEA wardrobes to create a little office nook. It feels like its own distinct space, despite being only three feet from the sofa!

This easy home decor tip is to update the hardware on the kitchen cabinets.

7. Upgrade Cabinet Hardware

Our IKEA kitchen had awkwardly-installed polished chrome cabinet pulls (2012 me thought they were great). Less than $100-worth of antique brass pulls and knobs later, people ask if I’ve renovated my kitchen recently! This little detail makes such a difference.

Then, I took this same concept to my basic hallway console, adding leather pulls that make it look like a custom piece. Cost: $22. Satisfaction: priceless.

Budget-friendly art is hanging over the bed.

8. Create Seasonal Art Displays on a Budget

When we finally moved from our garage into the home Sean built, I was eager to decorate every surface but quickly realized how expensive art can be. That’s when I discovered my favourite budget decorating hack: sourcing changeable art displays (like inexpensive prints and affordable frames) from flea markets and thrift stores.

Vintage images on a coffee bar are given a seasonal upgrade with little ghosts.

Amazon has become my secret source for gorgeous botanical prints, vintage illustrations, and seasonal artwork. I pair these with frames from the dollar store (yes, really!) that I sometimes spray paint to look more expensive. No one ever guesses my elegant French countryside prints in the dining room cost a total of $50, including the frames.

What makes this approach special is the freedom to switch things up seasonally. My coffee bar gets refreshed with different artwork every few months: autumn leaves in fall, snowy scenes in winter, and botanical prints in spring. I do the same with my office shelves, rotating in vintage-inspired science illustrations that make me smile while I work.

9. Style Your Surfaces

The day I cleared off my cluttered coffee table and added a stack of interesting books, a candle, and a small plant was the day my living room finally photographed like the ones I’d been saving online. That’s it: just three elements!

Now, I use the “rule of three” for all surfaces: group items in odd numbers, vary heights, and limit each surface to just a few intentional objects. My entryway catch-all table went from dumping ground to design moment with just a pretty shelf for keys, vintage books, and a small candle.

10. Focus on Scent

After a friend walked into my home and immediately commented on how good it smelled, I realized scent is really the invisible accessory of home decor. My now-signature scent is this Hygge candle from Cozy Prairie Linens Co. which subtly creates a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Orange and apple peels, cinnamon sticks, and cloves in a simmer pot will make your home smell amazing for any season.

When I’m expecting winter guests, I use this stove-top potpourri trick: simmer orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and cloves in water for an hour before people arrive. The scent is magical, and the house smells like I’ve been cooking something amazing when in reality we might have ordered takeout instead! Get my stove-top potpourri recipes for all seasons here!

Summary

When looking back on our journey from that little garage to the home Sean built, I’m amazed at how far we’ve come. Back then, decor was an afterthought—now our entire home feels like a reflection of us. What I’ve learned along the way is this: you don’t need a lot of money to create a beautiful space. Sean focused on quality and craftsmanship when building, and I brought that same care to our interior design—one thoughtful change at a time.
