Budget-Friendly Homework Station for Back to School

I made an inexpensive homework station for my girls for back to school! Get some ideas on how to make your own easy homework station that’s budget-friendly, beautiful, and organized.

I can hardly believe the time has come, but it’s almost back-to-school season! It’s making me think about the year when ALL my girls went to school together for the first time. Little B went to Kindergarten that year, and the other ones were in grades 3 and 5! Such a long time ago, but it also feels like yesterday too.

I remember thinking that with all three in school, we would need to convert a quiet corner in the basement into a homework area. We have our craft room/office on the main floor, but this area would be an option for one of my girls to find some solitude and get some school work (or crafts!) done on their own.

Earlier that year, we partnered with The Brick to make over our basement for the girls, and it’s been such a wonderful space for them! You can read all about it right here. To the right of our entertainment unit there was a bookshelf, but when the girls outgrew most of the books that lived on it, I decided to make this area their new homework station.

The beauty of this little corner is that it’s not expensive to recreate at all! I started with an adorable little low-profile desk. Not only is it the perfect compact size for a little spot like this, it was the right price too! I love its neutral wood colour paired with black metal legs. It’s a great match for our modern farmhouse-style basement.

The shelves beneath the worktop are a great location for a basket to hold things like headphones, pencil cases, and chargers, along with our laptop case.

Of course, extra storage is a must! I created a simple DIY magazine holder out of a cereal box, Mod Podge, and wrapping paper. It was such an cheap, easy DIY and holds all the paper, notebooks, and file folders the girls would ever need.

A comfy chair is essential to any work area, and I found one that is comfortable and stylish too! I love its molded seat and mid-century modern good looks, and it’s a great contrast to the new desk. It was also a fantastic price, so it keeps this little area budget-friendly and super cute.

Its scale is perfect, too. Not too big! It tucks nicely under the desk.

Another quick and easy DIY I did for this homework station is this painted bulletin board that serves as a movable gallery wall over the desk. It could also display calendars and paperwork too, depending on your needs. But at this point in our lives, I loved the art, faux florals, and DIY macrame piece I first pinned on it!

To help keep my girls motivated and organized, I placed a few things on the desk for them to look at and use: an inexpensive letter board, an old mason jar to store scissors and pens, and a couple of other fun accessories.

When my oldest daughter saw this desk are for the first time, she was so thrilled! She immediately sat down to begin writing her next story in her notebook.

I love when I don’t have to spend a ton of money to put together a cute space that my family loves! And this corner was the beginning of so many good family memories. My girls have always appreciated this little spot.
