6 IKEA Pieces Worth Buying Again (Ranked After 1–5 Years of Real Use)

Thinking about buying IKEA furniture but not sure what will actually hold up? I’m ranking the IKEA pieces I would totally buy again based on years of real-life use, not just how they looked in the store.

IKEA Pieces Worth Buying Again

There’s a big difference between IKEA furniture that looks great on day one and IKEA furniture that still looks great three years later with kids, pets, and everyday life happening around it.

I’ve been living with these six pieces for anywhere from one to five years. I’ve been using them in real homes, rental properties, and even renovation projects for clients. Some surprised me. Some have genuinely changed how our home functions day to day. A couple need a little more love than others.

Here’s my honest ranking, from solid-but-not-perfect all the way up to the one piece I would buy first if I was furnishing a new space tomorrow.

IKEA Pieces Worth Buying Again

#6 — IKEA BERGMUND Dining Chairs (with Slipcovers)

Time owned: ~2 years

The Bergmund chairs are IKEA’s classic slipcover dining chair in a Parson style — and they work beautifully in traditional or transitional spaces. I want to be clear: these are not bad chairs. The slipcovers wash well (a huge win for messy families), they’re sturdy, and they look genuinely classic.

The only reason they land at the bottom of this list is the occasional maintenance. Every so often I need to tighten the bolts where the legs attach to the seat. I did it twice last year — not a dealbreaker, but I’ve had higher-quality chairs that required zero maintenance.

Best for: Families with kids and pets who want a classic look and easy-to-clean slipcovers.

Modern coastal bedroom makeover with deep blue shiplap wall, vinyl plank flooring, IKEA furniture, and gold accents

#5 — IKEA BJÖRKSNÄS Bed Frame

Time owned: 5+ years

This bed frame has been rock solid. Solid wood construction, incredibly steady, zero maintenance required — and it’s been through hundreds of guest stays at our lake house rental without skipping a beat.

The one caveat: it has a very specific aesthetic. The slatted headboard and simple white wood frame give it a modern bohemian, Scandinavian vibe. If your style shifts over the years, it can be limiting. But if you love that clean, minimalist look, the quality here is absolutely worth it.

Best for: Anyone who loves a Scandinavian or modern boho bedroom style and wants furniture that can handle heavy use.

Modern coastal inspired bathroom renovation with marble tile, shiplap, gold and black accessories, clear shower door, blue and white colors & rattan accents

#4 — IKEA HEMNES Collection

Time owned: 5–6 years (multiple pieces)

I’m not just talking about one piece here — we’ve used the Hemnes line extensively: a bathroom bench, a bathroom vanity, a TV stand I converted into an entryway bench, and pieces for design-build clients. And every single time, Hemnes has delivered.

It’s dependable. It’s built with solid wood, and when assembled correctly, it lasts for years. The classic, square lines mean it works across a surprising range of decor styles — cottage, traditional, even a more modern home.

The reason it doesn’t rank higher? It’s a little… plain. Hemnes pieces can read very “IKEA” — familiar, but not distinctive. If you want personality in your space, you’ll likely want to paint them, add hardware, or style around them with texture and interest. But as a sturdy, affordable background piece? It’s one of my most recommended lines, every time.

Best for: Anyone who wants reliable, versatile furniture that can adapt to different spaces and styles with a little DIY love.

#3 — IKEA HÄGGVECKMAL Room-Darkening Curtains

Time owned: 1 year

This one might surprise you — curtains making the top three — but hear me out. Curtains are a surprisingly high-stakes purchase. They can look beautiful in the store and then pill, wrinkle, let in too much light, or just not hold up after a few washes.

These ones have ticked every box. After a full year of daily use in my bedroom and home office, they’ve held their shape beautifully and still look far more expensive than they actually are. The room-darkening quality is genuinely effective, and the classic plaid pattern (available in beige and green tones) pairs beautifully with florals and other patterns.

Light control is one of the most underrated things you can do for a space — especially a bedroom. These have improved my sleep noticeably, and they still look amazing.

Best for: Anyone who wants beautiful, functional room-darkening curtains that hold up to daily use without the designer price tag.

#2 — IKEA HAVSTA Cabinets

Time owned: ~18 months

I used the Havsta cabinets to build a custom-looking coffee bar in my dining room, and after 18 months of multiple-times-a-day use by me and my kids, these still look and function perfectly. All the door hinges are solid, the finish is holding up, and the overall look is exactly what I wanted.

What makes these exceptional is the combination of form and function. They’re not too deep, so they don’t eat up floor space. They offer generous storage for coffee supplies, seasonal decor, and more. And with a simple hardware swap (I went with antique brass), they look like a true built-in rather than flat-pack furniture.

If I were doing another built-in project, I wouldn’t hesitate to use Havsta cabinets again — and I’m actually planning a living room version using the newer drawer unit in this line.

Best for: Anyone who wants to create a built-in look without the custom cabinetry price tag.

#1 — IKEA HYLTARP Sofa

Time owned: 1 year

Absolutely, without hesitation, the Hyltarp sofa is my number one pick.

Sofas are high-stakes. They’re expensive, they’re used constantly, and they need to survive real family life. After one full year with three kids, four pets, and a genuinely busy household, these sofas still look wonderful — and more importantly, they give me peace of mind.

The slipcover design is the key. I can pull the covers off and throw them in the wash. Snack spills, pet hair, mystery stains — none of it is a source of anxiety because I know it’s fixable. I bought two sets of slipcovers when I purchased them, which I’d strongly recommend: you can swap seasonally, refresh the look whenever you want, and if IKEA ever discontinues the sofa, you have a backup cover ready to go.

The shape is also genuinely classic — clean lines, separate back and arm cushions — which means it reads well in coastal, transitional, and even slightly modern spaces. It’s versatile in a way not all sofas are.

If I was furnishing a new home tomorrow, the Hyltarp would be the very first purchase I’d make.

Best for: Families with kids and pets who want a stylish sofa that’s actually low-stress to own.
