Master the Mantel: 6 Simple Steps to Hang Gorgeous Garland
If you’ve ever found yourself wondering how to hang Christmas garland so it looks full and balanced, I’ve got you covered. From choosing the best placement and finding the right tools to mixing different greenery and adding twinkle lights, these easy steps will help you achieve a winter wonderland look.
Here’s a quick, step-by-step guide to hanging garland on your mantel for a perfect holiday look:
- Choose your placement: Hang the garland on the front of the mantel for extra fullness and depth. You can go with a centred or asymmetrical look, depending on your style.
- Secure with Command cord bundlers: These make hanging a breeze! Attach to the top of your mantel and loop your garland in! Bonus: no sticky residue to worry about!
- Fluff it up: Pull and adjust each stem to make the garland look lush and full. Curve the garland down both sides if it’s longer than the mantel for a beautiful drape.
- Mix greenery for fullness: Use different picks like pine, cedar, or eucalyptus (or any other foliage!) for added texture.
- Hang stockings underneath: Attach small Command hooks under the mantel for the stockings. This will add layers and texture to your holiday decor.
- Add twinkle lights: Weave fairy lights through the garland to bring some warmth and magic to your display.
And there you have it — a gorgeous garland setup in just a few easy steps! Be sure to watch the video for the full tutorial!

Festive Fusion: A Rustic Boho Christmas Mantel Makeover
Give your mantel a cozy, rustic boho makeover this Christmas! For this look, I went for a mix of sparkly neutrals, rich textures, and layered greenery to achieve a laid-back vibe. Here’s a closer look:
I started with two flocked garlands from Michaels, layering them with an old eucalyptus garland from IKEA for added depth. For a warm glow, I wove in wired copper fairy lights to create just the right sparkle. Draped across the front is my DIY tassel garland made from thrifted yarn, and then I added a couple of gold and white decorative trees from Michaels. A large mirror in the centre gives the mantel its focal point, and cozy fur and knit stockings round it all out.
Want to try this look? Here are some tips:
- Layer your greenery: Add texture by combining different greens like pine and eucalyptus. For extra points, add a spritz of essential oil to faux greens to give them that fresh-cut scent!
- Play with texture: Use various textures to make the mantel feel lush. There are no rules here – soft, spiky, smooth, furry — they all work beautifully together.
- Have a focal piece: Center your mantel with one standout feature. I used a large mirror, but you could try a wreath or artwork as your focus.

Mantel Secrets: Holiday Decorating Tricks in a Snap (Video)
Decorating the fireplace mantel is one of my favourite holiday traditions, especially since it’s the heart of our living room. For this display, I went for a neutral palette that’s rich in texture and cozy details. Here’s a peek at some of my favourite tricks to make any mantel look amazing for Christmas!
Start with a focal point
Every mantel needs a centrepiece! I created a large piece of artwork for this one, which you can actually download for your own mantel. It adds a personal, unique touch, and pulls the whole look together.

Anchor with pairs
To balance the mantel, I like to add a set of decorations on either end. Here, I chose a pair of lit faux trees, but lanterns or matching candles can work just as beautifully.
Add handmade touches
Our stockings are handmade, adding a little bit of extra love. I even have a free pattern available if you’d like to make some yourself.

Fresh & Fun: Asymmetrical Christmas Mantel Styling
Looking to shake things up with your holiday mantel decor? This year, I went for an asymmetrical Christmas mantel design with lush fresh greenery and soothing blue accents—and I love the result of this non-traditional color palette!
I decided to give the mantel a unique twist, opting for an asymmetrical garland that flows beautifully off just one side. I started with a fresh greenery garland from Costco Canada, then added extra depth with faux eucalyptus from IKEA and faux spruce stems from Michaels. It’s all about layering those textures for some cozy charm!
To bring in some colour, I matched the mantel with blue ornaments from our tree, plus some rustic bells and stockings. I added accents like candlesticks and bottle brush trees on the opposite side, keeping the display balanced and giving the whole mantel a fresh, non-traditional holiday look.
This asymmetrical mantel quickly became one of my favourite holiday looks! I love how the fresh greenery and cool blue tones give a fresh take on classic Christmas decor.

Sparkle & Shine: Create a Vintage Glam Christmas Mantel with DIY Art
I decided to give our Christmas mantel a vintage-inspired glam vibe with a throwback to my 2014 Christmas decor. Revisiting my roots and mixing in a little rustic glam with my favourite warm blue hues made this look come together beautifully!
I pulled out my glittery “JOY” DIY artwork and my DIY Anthropologie-inspired Christmas stockings I love so much. I added fresh greenery, mixed in a few old and thrifted treasures, and topped it all off with twinkly LED lights — they always feel like a sprinkle of magic, don’t you think?

One of my favourite parts of this mantel is the DIY “Joy to the World” artwork I created on a vintage map. Here’s how I made it:
Materials
- Mod Podge
- 24 x 36” stretched canvas
- Medium-sized nylon craft brushes (small enough to paint the letters on your artwork)
- 24 x 36” large artwork printed on medium-weight paper
- Black acrylic or latex paint
- Glitter (I used a coarse gold glitter)
Directions
- Download the art: Click here to grab my free “Joy to the World” artwork and have it printed at a large format printing service location like Staples.
- Prep the canvas: Start by painting the edges of your canvas and a bit of the top edge with black paint. This gives it a finished look!
- Attach the artwork: Spread Mod Podge on the back of your printed artwork using a large foam brush. Carefully turn the artwork over and smooth it onto the canvas. (Take your time here to ensure there are no creases or bubbles!)
- Add some glitter: Once your art is completely dry, grab a fine craft brush and dip it into Mod Podge. Paint over the letters you want to glitter — do one letter at a time to keep the Mod Podge from drying out too quickly. Then, sprinkle glitter over the wet Mod Podge, letting it dry before shaking off any excess.
And that’s it! You’re all set with a beautiful, unique piece of art to showcase on your mantel. I used my own artwork, but you can absolutely customize this with any large piece that has easy-to-paint letters!

Handmade Christmas Stockings: Anthropologie-Inspired Linen Burlap Tutorial
Here they are! The stockings I keep talking about! I wanted to make Christmas stockings that would stay classic enough to blend with our decor year after year, but still keep it fun. These are inspired by a lovely Anthropologie design. I decided to use soft Irish linen burlap in neutral tones, adding unique cuffs and trims to each stocking for a playful look.
Materials: I went with oatmeal and ivory linen burlap plus a variety of trims like faux fur, gold ribbons, lace, and pom-poms. The linen burlap is much softer than regular burlap, making it ideal for stockings! You can download the free stocking pattern here.
Ideas for different cuff designs:
- Try adding a short faux fur cuff or adorn it with pom-pom trim
- Create texture with vintage lace or patterned ribbon (you could even add red ribbon for a traditional Christmas color scheme!)
- Go bold with a full faux fur stocking and a plush cuff
- Don’t forget to add cute initials so that Santa doesn’t get mixed up!
These stockings were really fun to make and added a little farmhouse chic to our mantel. I’ve always thought these stockings would make such great DIY Christmas gifts, too! Be sure to check out the original post for all of the details and to get started on your own stockings.
