How to Make a DIY Tissue Holder with IKEA Finds

Have you ever looked at those standard tissue boxes and thought, “There must be a better way!”? Well, you’re in luck! Inspired by the creative genius @byfa.tema on Instagram, I’m going to transform some simple IKEA finds into a chic and functional DIY tissue box / holder. This DIY project is not only easy on the wallet but also adds a touch of elegance to your home decor. Ready to get started? Let’s go!

I find most tissue boxes pretty ugly, so creating a Kleenex storage solution that looks beautiful is a fun challenge! I’m so happy with how this IKEA hack turned out, and I can’t decide which version looks better. What do you think? Do you like the one above using the CHIAFRON pot? Or the one below featuring the FEJKA pot? Either one is super cute and really easy to make. These are a great addition to your own home decor, or they’d make a fun and unique gift.

Materials Needed:

  • IKEA 365+ round bamboo lid
  • IKEA CHIAFRON plant pot or IKEA FEJKA plant pot
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Pencil
  • 1 1/4″ hole saw
  • Drill
  • 80 grit sandpaper
  • Square box of tissues

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

First things first, head over to your nearest IKEA or shop online to get your hands on the IKEA 365+ round bamboo lid and either the CHIAFRON or FEJKA plant pot. These items are affordable and perfect for this DIY project. Don’t forget to grab a few essential tools if you don’t already have them at home.

Step 2: Mark the Center of the Lid

Take your measuring tape and pencil and mark the center of the bamboo lid. This step is crucial as it ensures that the hole you drill will be perfectly centered, giving your tissue holder a polished look.

Step 3: Drill the Hole

Now, it’s time to get a bit more hands-on. Place the lid on a stable surface and use a 1 1/4″ hole saw attached to your drill. Carefully drill a hole right in the middle of the lid. If you’re new to using a drill, take it slow and steady to avoid any mishaps.

Step 4: Sand the Edges

After drilling the hole, the edges might be a bit rough. Use 80 grit sandpaper to smooth out the edges of the hole. This not only gives it a neat finish but also ensures that the tissues won’t get caught when you pull them through.

Step 5: Prepare the Tissues

Now, grab your square box of tissues. From the side of the box, carefully remove a stack of tissues. It’s best to do this gently to maintain the fold and ensure they don’t get too crumpled. The fold side should be facing up as this makes it easier to pull the tissues through the hole.

Step 6: Assemble Your Tissue Holder

Place the stack of tissues inside the plant pot with the fold side up. Now, take the bamboo lid and place it on top of the plant pot. Pull one of the tissues through the hole, and voila! You’ve got yourself a stylish and functional tissue holder. This looks super cute on a kitchen or bathroom counter, on your coffee table, or on your side board. So much better than the standard box!

Why This DIY is a Game-Changer

What makes this DIY project so fantastic? For starters, it’s incredibly easy and budget-friendly. With just a few IKEA items and some basic tools, you can create a beautiful tissue holder that looks way more elegant than the standard box of tissues. Plus, it’s a fun project that you can complete in just a short amount of time.

The bamboo lid adds a natural, warm touch to your decor, while the sleek design of the plant pot keeps things modern and minimalist. This tissue holder is perfect for any room in your home, from the living room to the bathroom.

Tips for Personalization

While this DIY tissue box / holder is already chic and stylish, there are plenty of ways to personalize it to match your home decor:

  1. Paint the Plant Pot: Add a pop of color by painting the plant pot. Use spray paint for an even finish, or get creative with patterns and designs.
  2. Decorate the Lid: Use wood stain to enhance the natural bamboo or add a bit of paint to create a custom design on the lid. Stencils can help you achieve clean, professional-looking patterns.
  3. Add Embellishments: Glue on some decorative elements like small beads, sequins, or faux flowers to the lid for a more ornate look. You could even Mod Podge some fabric on the lid for a fun twist!
  4. Use Different Plant Pots: Experiment with different plant pots from IKEA. The CHIAFRON and FEJKA are great options, but there are other pots that could work beautifully for this project. Simply grab the IKEA 365+ round bamboo lid up in the IKEA kitchen section, bring it to the garden section, and see which pots it’ll fit!

There you have it – a simple, stylish, and budget-friendly DIY tissue holder using IKEA finds. This project is proof that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to add a touch of elegance to your home. Plus, it’s a fun and satisfying way to spend an afternoon.

Next time you have guests over, they’ll be sure to notice your chic new DIY tissue box and ask where you got it. And you can proudly say, “I made it myself!”

So, what are you waiting for? Grab your supplies and get started on this fun DIY project. Your tissues will never have looked so good! Happy crafting!

  1. This didn’t work AT ALL. The lid pulled off the container every time you try to remove a kleenex. Big ole Bummer.

  2. 1 1/4 inch hole is way too small. I wasted a lid because of your instructions. 2 inches was perfect. Please change your instructions.

  3. Just made this and was very excited about it. I followed the directions exactly. However, the tissues are not pulling out at all. They rip because you have to pull so hard. And you have to hold down the lid while you pull. I purchased two pots and two lids so I will experiment with a 1.5” drill bit on the second one. Stay tuned.
