Dreamy Cottagecore Decor Ideas for Your Home

Cottagecore, a dreamy aesthetic that celebrates the simplicity and charm of rural living, has taken the world by storm. With its roots in nostalgia and a longing for a slower, more intentional way of life, the cottagecore aesthetic is all about creating a cozy, inviting space that feels like a breath of fresh country air. Whether you’re living in a city apartment or a suburban home, these cottagecore decor ideas will help you bring a touch of pastoral magic into your everyday life.

Over the last few years, I’ve fallen madly in love with the “cottagecore” or vintage cottage style of decorating. It’s one of the more recent decorating trends that gained popularity over the last few years. To me, it’s so warm, cozy, and nostalgic. I decorated our Tiny Lake House in this style, and it definitely suits the small cabin! I plan on incorporating this style more into our own country home to give it more character and warmth. Here are some ways that you can bring the coziness of cottagecore into your own space this season!

Embrace Natural Materials

One of the hallmarks of cottagecore decor is the use of natural materials. Think weathered wood, stone, linen, and cotton. These materials not only add texture and warmth to your space but also connect you to the natural world. Consider incorporating reclaimed wood furniture, stone accents, and linen curtains. A wooden coffee table with a distressed finish or a stoneware vase filled with wildflowers can instantly transport you to a quaint countryside cottage. You can find some of my favourite linens and home decor made of natural and cottage-inspired materials on my online shop: Cozy Prairie Linens Co.!

Cozy Up with Soft Textiles

Comfort is key in cottagecore decor, and nothing says comfort like soft, cozy textiles. Layer your space with plush throws, knitted blankets, and an abundance of cushions. Opt for fabrics like wool, cotton, and linen in muted, earthy tones or delicate floral patterns. A cozy armchair draped with a chunky knit blanket and a few soft throw pillows can become your favorite spot to unwind with a good book and a cup of tea.

Add Vintage and Antique Touches

Vintage and antique pieces are essential to achieving the cottagecore look. Scour thrift stores, flea markets, and online marketplaces for unique finds like a vintage mirror, an old wooden chest, textured wicker baskets, or a delicate porcelain tea set. These items add character and a sense of history to your space. An antique dresser or a vintage-inspired rug can become a focal point in your room, infusing it with timeless charm. I love how my mom’s antique chairs look in our farmhouse cottage style breakfast nook!

Floral Prints and Botanical Elements

Florals are a staple in cottagecore decor. Whether through wallpaper, fabric, or artwork, incorporating floral prints can bring the beauty of the outdoors inside. Consider a floral-patterned wallpaper for an accent wall or a botanical print for your cushions and curtains. Don’t forget to add real plants, too! Houseplants like ferns, ivy, and lavender not only enhance the aesthetic but also improve air quality and bring a sense of tranquility to your home. The subtle floral wallpaper in the small bedroom at our Tiny Lake House is one of my favourite features in the space!

Create a Cozy Reading Nook

Every cottagecore home needs a cozy reading nook. Find a quiet corner in your living room or bedroom and transform it into a serene retreat. A comfortable chair, a small side table, and a good reading lamp are all you need to get started. Add a soft blanket, a few cushions, and a stack of your favorite books. For an extra touch of whimsy, hang some fairy lights or place a small potted plant nearby. This little corner can become your personal escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Incorporate Handmade and DIY Decor

Cottagecore celebrates the beauty of handmade and DIY decor. Creating your own home accessories adds a personal touch and a sense of accomplishment. Try your hand at making a macrame wall hanging, sewing your own cushion covers, or painting a piece of furniture. Not only will you have unique items that reflect your personality, but you’ll also enjoy the process of creating something with your own hands. You know I LOVE a good DIY and how much character it adds to a space!

Use Soft, Warm Lighting

Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood in a cottagecore-inspired home. Opt for soft, warm lighting to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Avoid harsh overhead lights and instead use table lamps, floor lamps, and fairy lights. Candles are also a wonderful addition, providing a warm, flickering glow that enhances the romantic, nostalgic feel of the space. Place candles in vintage candle holders or mason jars for an added touch of charm.

Display Your Collections

Cottagecore decor is all about surrounding yourself with things you love. Display your collections proudly, whether it’s vintage teacups, antique books, or handmade pottery. Create a gallery wall featuring photos or art from your travels. Open shelving or a glass-front cabinet in your cottagecore kitchen can be a great way to showcase your treasures. Group similar items together for a cohesive look, and don’t be afraid to mix and match different styles and eras. The key is to create a space that feels curated and personal.

Focus on Comfort and Functionality

While cottagecore style is undoubtedly beautiful, it’s also about creating a space that is comfortable and functional. Choose furniture and decor items that serve a purpose and make your daily life more enjoyable. A comfortable armchair for reading, a sturdy dining table for family meals, and a well-organized kitchen are all important elements. The goal is to create a home that feels welcoming and lived-in, where you can relax and unwind.

Personalize Your Space

Ultimately, cottagecore decor is about creating a space that reflects your personality and makes you feel at home. Don’t be afraid to incorporate your own personal touches, whether it’s family heirlooms, handmade crafts, or souvenirs from your travels on your shelves. Your home should tell your story and be a place where you feel comfortable and inspired. My mom’s lake home filled with family heirlooms, DIY projects, and antiques is proof that a collected, cottagecore home can look absolutely cozy and beautiful. Trust your instincts and have fun experimenting with different DIY & decor ideas until you find what feels right for you.
