If you’ve ever swooned over those stunning, vintage-style gold mirrors at Anthropologie but cringed at the price tag, you’re not alone. The famous Primrose mirror from Anthropologie (no longer available) was an absolute showstopper, but at up to $1500, it’s definitely not in my budget. That’s why I decided to DIY my own version for just $15—and let me tell you, it turned out incredible!
This project is super simple, requires only a few materials, and will leave you with an expensive-looking mirror that rivals the real deal. If you love budget-friendly, high-end-looking DIY projects, this tutorial is for you!

The Before: My Thrift Store Find
The magic of thrifting is that you never know what you’ll find. When I spotted this arched wooden mirror at the ReStore shop for only $15, I knew I had to grab it. The shape was perfect for recreating that antique-inspired look, and the wooden frame made it ideal for an easy makeover.
While the mirror itself was in great shape, the frame lacked the decorative details and the rich gold finish that makes the Anthropologie version so luxurious. But with a little creativity and a few inexpensive supplies, I knew I could turn it into something beautiful!
Here’s exactly how I transformed my thrifted mirror into a high-end statement DIY mirror with just a few easy steps.

Step 1: Add Wooden Appliques for Detail
One of the most distinctive features of the Anthropologie mirror is its ornate detailing. My thrifted find didn’t have any of that, so I decided to create my own embellishments using wooden appliques from Amazon. You can find similar wood trim pieces at home improvement stores like Home Depot.
These appliques are a game-changer! They’re super lightweight, inexpensive, and come in all kinds of intricate designs. To attach them to the mirror’s frame, I used E6000 glue, which provides a really strong hold once fully dried.
Tip: Plan Before You Glue!
Play around with placement before gluing the wood appliques to your DIY mirror frame to make sure everything looks symmetrical and balanced.

Step 2: Paint the Frame Black for Depth
Once the appliques were securely in place, it was time to create the perfect base for that rich antique gold finish. Instead of painting the mirror gold right away, I first sprayed the entire frame with matte black spray paint.
Why black? A dark undercoat helps create depth and dimension, making the final gold finish look more aged and authentic. Trust me, this step makes all the difference!
I masked off the actual mirror glass with painter’s tape and paper to prevent any overspray. Then, I applied a coat of matte black spray paint, letting it dry completely before moving on.
Spray Painting Tips
Use light, even sprays from about 12 inches away to avoid drips or uneven coverage. I only had to use one coat of my black spray paint, but you may have to do 2 coats. 2 lighter coats is usually better than one heavy coat, which can be drippy or uneven.

Step 3: Create an Antique Gold Finish with Rub ‘n Buff
Now for the fun part: making it look like an expensive antique mirror! Instead of using traditional gold paint, I went with Rub ‘n Buff in Antique Gold, which is a wax-based finish that gives an incredibly realistic aged metal look.
Here’s how I applied it:
- Using a gloved hand or a soft cloth, I gently rubbed a small amount of Rub ‘n Buff over the black-painted frame. A little goes a long way!
- I focused on applying it lightly at first, then built up the color where I wanted more depth.
- To give it a more aged and authentic look, I didn’t cover the black completely. I let some of the black show through in the crevices for a naturally worn effect.
- Once I was happy with the coverage, I buffed the frame with a clean cloth, which gives the finish a soft, polished sheen.
Finishing Tip
If you want a brighter gold, apply multiple thin layers, buffing in between until you reach your desired look.

The Final Reveal
I was honestly shocked at how beautiful this mirror turned out. The combination of the added appliques, the black undercoat, and the Rub ‘n Buff finish gave it that high-end, vintage-inspired look that I was going for. The best part? It only cost me $15 for the mirror + about $20 in supplies: HUGE savings compared to the $1500 Anthropologie version!
Now, this mirror is a gorgeous statement piece in my home. I love how it adds a touch of elegance and warmth to the space, and knowing that I created it myself makes it even more special.
