Are you looking for ways to fill that awkward, empty corner in your home’s main living space? In my years of decorating my own house and other people’s, I’ve figured out some tips and tricks to make those corners a natural part of the rest of your room without making it feel forced or overpowering. So today, I’m sharing my 10 favourite living room corner decor ideas to give you a little inspiration! Let’s see which one you like best.

How to style an awkward corner?
I’ve been styling interiors for a long time. And I find that there’s one spot that always seems to be a challenge: those pesky living room corners! When left empty, they look barren and uninviting. If too full, they make your whole home look cluttered. They’re not big enough for a giant piece of furniture, but they’re usually too large for a small decor piece. I’ve come up with some solutions to this problem over the years! Here are some ideas for living room corner decor and how to make it work for your space.

Floor Lamp
A stylish floor lamp can be both practical and decorative and it’s often the perfect addition to an empty living room corner. A unique lamp can add beauty to your corner and bring some much-needed light to the room too! I always love a statement floor lamp by the sofa, and something with a large arched arm can fill up empty corner space nicely.

Art
Creating a gallery wall or adding a large piece of framed art is a great way to fill an empty corner. It can add so much personality to your living room! Choose a collection of favourite art pieces or family photos and create a gallery that reflects your style. You can frame these pieces in different sizes or colours, and don’t be afraid to mix and match picture frames. If you don’t like the look of a gallery wall, a single large piece of artwork is another good option. Don’t be afraid to fill a good portion of the wall with the frame. Bigger is often better when it comes to statement art!

Reading Nook
Transforming a corner into a comfy reading nook can be the perfect way to create a cozy vibe in your living room. Choose a comfortable chair, add a small side table or other accent table, and put a blanket basket nearby. We added a reading nook like this to our Little Lake House living room corner, and our guests love it. We used an outdoor egg-style chair from Walmart paired with an air purifier table from IKEA. With some DIY cushions to complete the look, it’s a practical and comfy combo! A cozy reading nook can also double as a mini home office if you can find a little table that can slide right up to the chair. Doesn’t that sounds like the best kind of workspace?

Picture Ledges
Picture ledges are an excellent way to add some visual interest to an awkward corner in your living room. These shelves can be used to display art or hold books or small decorative items. I love the IKEA MOSSLANDA picture ledges. They aren’t as deep as a typical corner shelf, making them ideal for small spaces. In my brother’s condo living room, we even found a way to give these picture ledges a useful job to do besides holding art: the ledge we chose hides his thermostat from view!

Indoor Plants
Adding some greenery to your living room is a great way to bring nature in. It also creates a fresh and welcoming atmosphere. A tall plant in a decorative pot can be an excellent addition to a corner. You can also create a mini indoor garden on a small table or stool. I always recommend live plants if you have the space and time for them. However, there are some beautiful faux plants on the market, like these faux olive trees. Whether they’re real or faux – the addition of greenery in your space will always make it look more inviting. And remember to use an eye-catching pot to add texture and interest to the space too!

Accent Chair
Adding an accent chair to a corner in your living room can provide additional seating, making your room feel more comfortable and accommodating. Choose a unique design that complements your existing space and adds some texture and colour to the corner. Don’t forget to measure your corner and choose an appropriately sized chair. Some corners may only be able to accommodate an apartment-sized chair, while others may be able to take an oversized chaise lounge. I always love a good accent chair that truly displays your personality! Add a couple of fun pillows and your unused corner comes to life.

Bar Cart
If you love entertaining guests, a bar cart in a living room corner can be a functional and visually appealing addition. Display your favourite alcohol, spirits, glassware, and cocktail accessories and transform the cart into a stylish and inviting mini bar. Alternatively, you can use a bar cart to create a mobile coffee station too. I’ve done that in our living room, and it turned out beautifully!

Mirrors
Mirrors are a beautiful living room corner decor idea that create the illusion of space in a small living room. A large mirror in a lovely frame is an attractive feature that adds depth, reflects light, and complements the rest of your decor. You can never go wrong with an extra mirror in your space! I often default to mirrors as wall decor, and there’s a mirror out there for every home decor style.

Fireplace
Here’s an idea that you probably haven’t thought of before! A little corner fireplace can be a wonderful addition to your living room. And believe it or not, for this living room corner idea you don’t need to do any major renovations and you don’t need a lot of space either! There are lots of beautiful electric fireplaces on the market that are built especially for corners. We put a small electric fireplace that looks like a vintage wood stove in the corner of our Tiny Lake House living room. It acts as a heater for the space and it adds a focal point to the room. Perfect.

Storage Cabinet
If you have kids with lots of toys or if you simply want extra storage space, adding a storage cabinet to a corner is a great solution. I’ve done this with a couple of different IKEA cabinets – the PAX wardrobes and the HAVSTA cabinets both work great. Either one can butt up right against a corner wall and make that empty space so much more functional. You can store anything and everything inside cabinets like this! I find a closed cabinet has a much tidier look than open shelving whether you are storing kids’ books or just odds and ends.
That’s it, all my best living room corner decor ideas! Whether you choose to create a gallery wall, a reading nook, or a storage area or add a plant or two, I hope you enjoyed these decor ideas and feel inspired to make the most of your corner! With a little imagination and some decorative items, you can add functionality, style, and beauty to that little awkward space in your living room.
