Having a small entryway can be a real challenge! It’s easy to feel like there’s no room to store all the shoes, hats, jackets, gloves, scarves, and everyday items that naturally pile up around the front door. Some entry spaces are so tiny that even a console table or a simple coat rack seems out of the question. So, what’s the solution?

In this roundup, I’m sharing tons of entryway ideas and design elements that make the most of every inch, no matter how small your space is. The entrance of your home is the first thing people see when they walk through the door, and it sets the tone for the rest of the home — so let’s make it count!
Whether you’re working with a narrow hallway or simply looking for modern entryway ideas, these tips will help you maximize your entry space. Let’s check out these entryway design ideas and get started!

Before & After: Small Entryway Makeover in Our Tiny Lake House
If you’ve been following our Tiny Lake House makeover, you know that one of the biggest challenges we faced was making the most of every nook and cranny. Our small entryway was no exception! It was definitely cramped. But after a little creativity and a lot of DIY magic, we were able to give it an extreme makeover!
I think we might have created one of the smallest entryways known to mankind — it’s only 33 inches wide! But despite the tiny size, the 7-foot-long hallway had some serious potential. Here’s what we did to make it functional and stylish:
- Bright and fresh paint colours to instantly liven up the space
- A narrow IKEA wardrobe hack to maximize storage without overwhelming the space
- Baskets for some extra hidden storage
- A shaker peg hook rail for coats, bags, and accessories
- A niched entryway mirror that takes up almost no space at all — isn’t Sean talented?
- And of course, we added beautiful and meaningful accessories to make the space feel more personal and welcoming.
With a few smart choices, we turned our tiny entryway into a stylish, functional space that feels so much bigger than it really is!

Transforming a Tiny Entry with Big Storage Ideas
Do you have an awkward or narrow entryway like we do in our own home? Check out how I gave our small entry a major makeover with DIY trim, smart organization ideas, a runner rug, an IKEA STALL shoe cabinet hack, and tons of hidden hallway storage!
Our biggest struggle? Shoes everywhere! Boots, sneakers, sandals — they always piled up in the hallway, and it drove me nuts. Plus, our little guest closet on the west wall was a total mess. No upper or lower shelves meant zero organization for coats and yes, even more shoes.
I knew we needed a better shoe situation, but since our hallway is so narrow, a big storage bench or any type of bulky furniture was out of the question. So, what to do? Cue IKEA, of course! Two IKEA STALL shoe cabinets became the jumping-off point. At just 6″ deep, they added much-needed storage without taking up precious space. Bonus: they double as an entryway table, a drop zone for mail, keys, and sunglasses, and are the perfect spot for seasonal decor!
Even though it was one of those projects that seemed to take forever to complete (hello, caulking and painting for days!), it was all worth it. The shoe cabinets give us so much more storage and do not take up too much space. And, all the trim detail matches the traditional bones of our home. I just LOVE how this entryway area turned out! And the best part? No more tripping over piles of shoes every time we walk through the door.
How To Build A Board & Batten Hook Wall Entry
Want to know one of the best ways to organize a small entryway? Use every square inch! When space is limited, every detail counts, and a board and batten wall with hooks is an excellent way to keep clutter from piling up by the front door. Not only does it add a touch of charm and character to your space, but it also keeps the mess under control by giving everything a designated spot — coats, purses, hats, and more.
This DIY project is easier than you might think, too! With just a few materials and a bit of time, you can create a totally customized look that fits your entryway or mudroom perfectly. You can choose the paint colour, hook style, and trim details to match the rest of your house. It’s YOUR project, so make it what you want!

To help you get started, I’ve put together a step-by-step video tutorial showing exactly how to create this feature wall. Check it out and see just how easy it is to transform your entryway into a space you’ll love!
Creating an Entry with a Cabinet Room Divider
If you live in a smaller home, you know how important storage is — especially in the entryway, where things tend to get dropped, piled up, and forgotten. But what if you don’t have a coat closet or even a nearby wall to work with? Easy! Create the illusion of a formal foyer.
One of the best ways to define an awkward entry and add storage is by using a floating cabinet as a dividing wall. That’s exactly what we did in our tiny home, and it worked perfectly! We chose a sturdy unit with a unique mix of doors, drawers, nooks, and shelves, maximizing every inch from floor to ceiling. We even added baskets on top for extra storage without cluttering the space. Not only does this cabinet give us plenty of entryway organization, but it also creates a natural focal point when you walk in. Plus, it helps separate the space without the need for actual walls — such a simple fix for a frustrating layout! Don’t you just love when a solution is both stylish and practical?
Before & After: A Tiny Mudroom Gets a Cheerful Makeover!
Is your back entryway combined with your laundry area? For years, the mudroom/laundry room combo was a super popular home layout. If your house has the same setup, I want to show you how we transformed our small Little Lake House mudroom into a functional, beautiful space!
We used an old IKEA TV stand as an entryway bench before starting this makeover. It worked OK, but I knew I could make it so much better. I wanted to bring in more colour, life, and functionality to really maximize the space.

While I usually lean toward neutrals, this time I went with earthy, happy tones: yellow, green, grey, and white, all in durable Behr paint. To replace the single row of hooks we had above the TV stand, I installed a custom hook wall with beadboard and trim to give it some texture and visual interest. Then, I cut a piece of pine to create open shelving above the hooks, securing it with brackets and screws. This gave us space for baskets, adding even more storage! Finally, I trimmed out the bench to give it a polished look while cleverly hiding the fact that our old house doesn’t exactly have level floors. Plus, it only looks like it’s built in — it still moves, so I can clean underneath!
Now, our mudroom is a super functional, cheerful, welcoming space. I love how it all came together!

Maximize Your Mudroom with a Recycling Station & Command Centre
Come see how I turned a bare little nook into a DIY recycling and family command station in this mudroom/laundry room! I absolutely loved this project — it was so satisfying to take an empty space and make it both beautiful and super useful.
To start, I added two IKEA cabinets for hidden recycling bins and used my Cricut to create custom labels for sorting different materials inside. For the countertop, I repurposed a leftover piece from another project, drilling holes to create a built-in charging station at one end. To finish off the recycling setup, I added fabric bins and recycling bags inside the drawers and installed knobs to complete the look.

Since this spot was already so functional, it was the perfect place to add a family command centre too! I mounted a magazine file, whiteboard, bulletin board, and recycled cork trivets to keep everything organized. To bring in some personality, I attached printable artwork to the wooden bulletin board for a gallery wall feel — these lovely blue & yellow vintage botanical prints are linked right here! And the lemon-themed printable lists are designed by me — you can download them for free!
I love how this space turned out. Not only is it practical and a great daily reminder to recycle, but it also adds so much personality to this mudroom entry!
