Sprinkle, Stir, Savour: DIY Pumpkin Spice Mix

Fall has arrived, friends, and you know what that means: it’s PSL (pumpkin spice latte, if you don’t know) season! A pre-made mix of pumpkin spice blends is a must-have in the kitchen for this season. Whether you’re whipping up some lattes, baking pies, cookies, or cakes, or making a classic pumpkin pie, this spice blend makes everything easier. But why buy it when you can make your own? Here’s a homemade pumpkin spice recipe you can throw together in minutes and keep in your pantry all year long. Trust me, once you try this, you’ll never go back to store-bought. Bring on the pumpkin recipes!

What is Pumpkin Spice?

Pumpkin spice blend is a warm and aromatic mix of spices that we usually associate with fall flavours. It typically includes a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves. Some people add allspice (like me!) or cardamom for extra depth.

When I decided to bake some homemade snickerdoodles with a fall twist by adding pumpkin spice mix (get my delicious Pumpkin Spice Snickerdoodles recipe here), I realized I didn’t have any on hand. Instead of making a trip to the store, I figured it would be easy enough to throw together my own. Turns out, it was super simple! Not only did it add the perfect flavour to my cookies, but now I’ve got a whole batch of it ready for whenever a recipe calls for that cozy, warm spice blend.

This homemade mix is so versatile. You can sprinkle a pinch onto oatmeal or French toast, add it to pumpkin muffins, or even mix it into pancakes for an extra burst of flavor. Making your own batch means you can control the freshness and adjust the ratio of spices to suit your taste. It’s a great way to guarantee you always have that pumpkin spice goodness ready to go!

Storing your own pumpkin pie spice mix in your spice drawer also ensures it’s always within reach when a recipe calls for a dash of fall in your homemade pumpkin bread or pumpkin spice latte.

This DIY pumpkin spice mix is extra-quick to put together and essential for your fall baking. The flavour it adds to each recipe is unbeatable! You can scatter it into pie fillings, stir it into your favourite cookie dough, or mix it into seasonal drinks. Plus, you’ll never have to rush to the store for pre-made mixes again!

How to Store Your DIY Pumpkin Spice Mix

In my experience, it’s easiest to make a batch in bulk so it’s always ready to use by the spoonful. Store your homemade pumpkin spice mix in an airtight container, like a mason jar, and keep it in a cool, dark place. It will stay fresh for up to six months, though the flavor is best within the first 10-12 weeks. While freezing isn’t necessary for a spice mix, you can freeze it to extend its shelf life even further. Just make sure to use a well-sealed container to prevent moisture from affecting the spices, and thaw it at room temperature before use.

Enough waiting – here it is! The super simple DIY pumpkin spice mix recipe!
