For the kitchen, I wanted to use some metal farmhouse chairs that I already had on hand, but to tie them into the coastal decor I made some striped chair pads for them. This was a simple sewing project, and I wanted to share the steps with you so that you could make some DIY chair pads for your chairs, too. How to make simple DIY chair pads

For this DIY, you’ll need:

• decor fabric (the amount will depend on the size and number of your chairs)
• 1″ thick foam
• sewing machine
• pins, scissors, pencil, ruler
• scrap fabric or paper to make the pattern

Here are my metal bistro chairs. They were originally a pewter colour, then I spray painted them copper, and THEN I chalk painted them white. I thought they’d be perfect for our lake house around the farmhouse table, but I wanted to make them comfier and more coastal looking.

Creating the pattern

First, I put some scrap fabric onto the seat of one chair and traced around its perimeter onto the fabric with a pencil.  Then, I cut out this shape and marked both sides of the back piece onto the fabric. This is where the ties will go. I’m going to cut 2 simple 5 x 22″ rectangles for the strap pieces. Your patterns will look something like this:

Making the chair pads

Using the chair pad main piece pattern, I cut ONE piece from this 1″ deep foam. Next, I placed this pattern piece onto my striped fabric (I’m using this fabric), added ONE INCH around the perimeter, and cut 2 pieces of the fabric for the front and back of the DIY chair pad. Then, I cut two strap pieces from the striped fabric that are 5 x 22″. Next, I folded each of the straps in half length wise and sewed along one of the top and side edge. I turned both straps right sides out and pressed them. Then, I pinned the straps to the right side of one of the main chair pad pieces and sewed them in place, like above. After that, I placed the two chair pad pieces right sides together and sewed around the perimeter of the pieces using a 1/2″ seam allowance. Leave a hole between the two straps. After sewing, I turned the chair pad right-side-out. I rolled up the piece of foam, inserted it into the hole on the chair pad, and then unrolled it inside. Finally, I hand-stitched the opening shut to complete these adorable DIY chair pads. These look so sweet tied onto the bottoms of my metal bistro chairs, and I love how the tie into everything in our Little Lake House Kitchen.   Now tell me: What do you think of these DIY chair pads?
