Easy DIY Accent Wall Ideas to Add Personality to Your Home

Have you ever walked into a room and felt it was missing something? That spark of personality that makes a space feel truly unique and inviting? Sometimes, all it takes is an accent wall to completely transform a room. An accent wall can highlight your decor, make a bold statement, or add a touch of whimsy. And the best part? You can achieve all of this with some DIY! Here are some of my favorite easy DIY accent wall ideas that will add a ton of character to your home decor.

Dark Painted Wall: A Bold Statement

Let’s start with a classic: the dark painted wall. When I renovated my friend’s basement bedroom, I knew it needed something dramatic to elevate the space. I chose a stunning blue-black wall paint color that added depth and sophistication to the room. Dark walls can seem intimidating at first, but they create a cozy, enveloping atmosphere that lighter colors simply can’t match. Plus, they provide a perfect backdrop for artwork, photographs, and other decor items.

To achieve this look, all you need is high-quality paint and a bit of patience. Painting an accent wall a bold color is an easy DIY project that makes a huge impact! Make sure to use painter’s tape to get clean edges and consider a paint with a slight sheen to catch the light beautifully – eggshell is my favourite. The transformation will be worth every stroke of the brush!

Peel and Stick Wallpaper: Versatile and Easy

If painting isn’t your thing, peel and stick wallpaper is a fantastic alternative. I’ve used it in various spaces, and it never fails to impress. For instance, in our Tiny Cabin rental, I added a vibrant floral wallpaper to the living room wall. The playful pattern brought a touch of nature indoors and made the small space feel lively and inviting.

Come see how a plain, dated bedroom was transformed into a bright and cheerful bedroom with a bunk bed and blue, yellow and white colors

In another project, I used a geometric peel and stick wallpaper in our Little Lake House bunk room. The crisp lines and modern design gave the room a chic, contemporary feel. Peel and stick wallpaper is perfect for renters or those who like to switch things up often, as it can be easily removed without damaging the walls.

The application process is straightforward: measure your wall, cut the wallpaper slightly longer than needed, peel off the backing, and stick it to the wall. Smooth out any bubbles with your hand or a rubber edge, trim off any excess with a utility knife, and you’re done! You can find my full step-by-step tutorial on how to install peel and stick wallpaper here.

Shiplap Wall: Rustic Charm with MDF

For a touch of rustic or modern coastal charm, consider a shiplap wall. In the primary bedroom of our little lake house, I used MDF shiplap painted in a rich, dark blue. The shiplap added texture and interest to the room, making it feel cozy yet elegant.

To DIY a shiplap wall, you’ll need MDF shiplap boards, a measuring tape, a miter saw, a nail gun, and paint. Start by measuring and cutting your boards, then nail them to the wall on the wall studs from the bottom up. Once all the boards are up, paint them in your chosen color (or paint them white for a timeless look). The result is a beautiful, timeless wall that adds warmth and character to any room. A horizontal shiplap wall is more classic, while a vertical shiplap wall is an interesting spin on the trend for a more modern accent wall. I’ve also used shiplap on the ceiling in both of our lake cabins and it looks amazing! You can find my full step-by-step shiplap installation tutorial right here.

Picture Frame Trim Wall: Elegant and Sophisticated

Another elegant option is a picture frame trim wall. This style works beautifully in spaces where you want to add a touch of sophistication. I recently created a soft green accent wall with picture frame trim in my niece’s nursery, and it turned out wonderfully.

For this project, you’ll need trim molding, a miter saw, a level, and paint. Begin by planning out your design on paper, then measure and cut your trim pieces to fit. Attach the trim to the wall using a nail gun, ensuring everything is level and evenly spaced. Once the trim is up, paint the entire wall and trim in the same color for a seamless look. This technique adds architectural interest and a refined touch to any room.

Board and Batten Wall: Classic and Timeless

Board and batten walls are a timeless choice that can suit any decor style. In our living room, I created a board and batten accent wall using baseboard trim, and it completely transformed the space. This style adds a touch of classic elegance and can make a room feel more structured and cohesive.

To create a board and batten wall, you’ll need baseboard trim, a level, a saw, and paint. Start by measuring and cutting your trim pieces, then attach a couple to the wall horizontally at the distance you’d like. Then, attach more pieces of trim to the wall in a vertical pattern using a nail gun. The spacing between the battens can vary depending on the look you want to achieve. Once all the battens are up, caulk the seams, paint the wall and trim with a paint brush & roller in the same color for a polished finish. This technique adds depth and texture, making your walls look more dynamic and interesting. Click here for my full DIY board & batten accent wall tutorial!

Feminine Modern Farmhouse Guest Bedroom Makeover with large floral wall mural, upholstered headboard, and blush pink, grey and copper colors

Wallpaper Mural: Art on Your Walls

If you want to make a big statement, here’s a fun feature wall idea: install a wallpaper mural! In our basement guest bedroom, I installed an oversized floral mural that became the room’s focal point. It was like adding a piece of art directly to the wall, creating a stunning visual impact. I love a good oversized floral, but you can find all sorts of realistic looking wallpaper murals that look like a brick wall, a stone accent wall, a landscape, a wood accent wall, a giant oil painting… the options are endless!

To install a wallpaper mural, you’ll need the mural panels, wallpaper paste (if it’s not peel and stick), a smoothing tool, and a utility knife. Start by planning the layout and marking where each panel will go. Apply the paste to the wall or the back of the panel, then carefully position the panel on the wall, smoothing out any bubbles as you go. Trim any excess at the edges with a utility knife. The result is a breathtaking wall that can transport you to another place or evoke a particular mood.

  1. Christine, I love your decorating. It feels so fresh and clean. We just bought a house that is in great shape, but it is a shrine to the 80s. We will be redoing all the floors and I am going to paint the interior alabaster white until I have a firm idea of what I want. How do you go about redecorating an entire house and maintaining a certain design integrity? Also, it is a front the back split and has a very plain exterior. I love the board and batten look inside, but I am not sure that it will coordinate with the modern look of the exterior .
