The Thrift Store Find
You know those moments when you spot something at the thrift store and instantly see its potential? That’s exactly what happened when I found this spoon rack. It was dusty, scratched, and definitely not in great shape, but I knew it had good bones. The multiple racks meant it could hold more than just spoons, and with a little work, I could transform it into a practical and pretty storage piece for my entryway.
Cleaning and Prepping the Spoon Rack
Before diving into the fun part, I had to give this piece a good cleaning. A damp cloth, a bit of mild soap, and some elbow grease removed years of grime. Since it was an older piece, there were some cracks in the wood, but instead of fighting them, I decided to embrace the character they added to the final look.

A Pop of Colour for this Spoon Rack DIY
I wanted this organizer to feel fresh and playful, so I grabbed a can of dusty rose spray paint and got to work. I applied a few light coats, letting each one dry thoroughly. But once the paint dried, the cracks and imperfections still showed through. Rather than repainting endlessly, I had an idea: why not add fabric for a unique, textured look?

Adding Fabric with Mod Podge
I raided my stash of scrap fabric and found a beautiful floral pattern that perfectly complemented the dusty rose paint. Using scissors, I cut pieces to fit the back of the spoon rack and carefully applied them with Mod Podge.

A top coat of Mod Podge over the fabric sealed it in place and gave it a slightly glossy, durable finish. The result? A one-of-a-kind background that added depth and charm to the piece.

Installing Cup Hooks for Hanging Storage
To make this organizer truly functional, I needed a way to hang small everyday items like keys and sunglasses. The bottom bracket of the spoon rack provided the perfect space for some cup hooks. I used a drill to make small pilot holes, then twisted in a few sturdy cup hooks. Now, I had the perfect place to keep my keys handy and never lose my sunglasses again.

Creating a Mail Slot with a Drawer Pull
No entryway organizer is complete without a place for mail! To add this feature, I repurposed a simple drawer pull. Using E6000 adhesive, I firmly attached it to the bottom section of the rack, allowing it to hold letters, envelopes, or even a small notepad. Once it was fully set, it was surprisingly sturdy and functioned exactly as I’d hoped.

Mounting the Organizer
Since I wanted a damage-free way to hang my new organizer, I opted for a Command picture hanging strip. These strips hold weight well and make it easy to remove or reposition the piece if needed. Once mounted, the organizer instantly transformed my entryway from a cluttered mess to a stylish, functional space.

The Final Result
I couldn’t be happier with how this project turned out! The dusty rose paint, combined with the floral fabric, gave the spoon rack a fresh, modern look. The added hooks and mail holder made it incredibly useful, and now my keys, sunglasses, and mail all have a designated spot.
Why I Love This Spoon Rack DIY
This spoon rack DIY is a perfect example of why I love thrifting and upcycling. With just a little effort and creativity, I took something outdated and turned it into a functional, stylish piece that suits my home perfectly. Plus, the total cost was minimal since I used items I already had on hand.
