I Tried the Viral IKEA HYLTARP Sofa for Over a Year and Here’s My Honest Review

If you’ve been wondering whether the IKEA HYLTARP sofa is still worth it after the newness wears off, my answer is yes. After owning two HYLTARP sofas for over a year, I still love them and would buy them again.

When I first bought our IKEA HYLTARP sofas, I loved the look right away, but I also wondered how they’d hold up in real life. It’s easy for a sofa to feel like a great purchase in the first few weeks. It’s much harder for it to still feel like a smart buy after over a year of daily use.

Now that we’ve had these sofas through family hangouts, naps, holiday gatherings, seasonal decorating changes, and everyday life, I can honestly say they’ve been one of my favorite furniture purchases for our home. In this updated review, I’m sharing what I still love, what’s changed over time, and whether I still think the IKEA HYLTARP is worth the money after more than a year.

Why I Chose the IKEA HYLTARP Sofa

When we were ready to replace our old couch, I wanted our living room to feel warm, classic, and inviting, like the look I shared in my Nancy Meyers-inspired living room makeover on a budget. In my original review, I shared that I was dreaming of two sofas facing each other for a warm, welcoming conversation area, and the HYLTARP gave me that look for far less than higher-end options.

I was drawn to the HYLTARP because it offered:

  • a classic slipcovered look
  • washable, removable covers
  • a compact size that worked well in our space
  • a style that felt traditional, cozy, and versatile

More than a year later, those are still the exact reasons I’m happy we chose them.

First Impressions vs. One Year Later

When we first brought the HYLTARP sofas home, my biggest surprise was how firm they felt. In my original 6-month review, I mentioned that they felt firmer than expected at first, but softened over time while still staying supportive.

That’s still true now.

After over a year, the cushions have softened just enough to feel more comfortable than they did in the beginning, but they have not turned saggy or sloppy. That is honestly one of the things I appreciate most. They still have shape, they still feel supportive, and they still look neat and tailored in the room.

So if you sit on one in the store and think it feels a little firm, I would not let that stop you. In my experience, they break in nicely without losing their structure.

How the IKEA HYLTARP Has Held Up After Over a Year

This is the part I think matters most.

A lot of sofas look good for the first few months. The real question is how they perform after a full year of normal family life. For us, the HYLTARP sofas have held up beautifully.

Here’s what I’ve noticed after over a year:

The cushions still keep their shape

This was one of my biggest hopes, and thankfully it has been true. The cushions still look full and supportive. They do not have that worn-in, sunken look that some sofas get too quickly.

The frames still feel sturdy

Nothing feels loose, wobbly, or cheaply made. They still feel solid and dependable, which is important when a sofa gets used every single day. (Make sure you follow IKEA’s instructions perfectly when you build these!)

The slipcovers are still one of my favorite features

In my original review, I shared how much I loved being able to wash the covers and even switch colors with the seasons. That has only become more true over time. The washable slipcovers make these sofas feel much more practical for real family life.

I still love the look

This might sound simple, but it matters. After a year, I’m not tired of them. I still walk into the room and feel happy with how they look. They still give that cozy, collected, higher-end feel I wanted from the beginning.

My Slipcover Obsession: Changing Seasons, Changing Looks

One of my favorite features of the HYLTARP is the ability to completely transform the look with different slipcover colors. I started with the Gransel natural covers in spring. They felt light, airy, and perfect for the warmer months.

For fall, I switched to the Gransel gray-brown slipcovers, and I honestly love them just as much! The brown feels richer and more grounding, perfect for cozy autumn evenings. Being able to change the entire vibe of the room seasonally is such a fun design element that I didn’t fully appreciate until I experienced it.

Pro Tip for Slipcover Care

Don’t fully dry the covers in the dryer. Pull them out slightly damp, slip them back on the frames, and let them air dry into place. This prevents wrinkles and gives you that perfectly fitted look without the hassle of ironing.

I use a handheld steamer for any stubborn creases, and it works perfectly (despite IKEA’s recommendation to iron inside out. Ain’t nobody got time for that).

The Honest Pros and Cons

What I Love About the HYLTARP:

Looks Way More Expensive Than It Is: The clean lines and quality slipcovers give it a custom, high-end appearance that guests consistently comment on.

Perfect Firmness: Once you adjust to it, the firm support is ideal for both sitting and lounging. Plus, we found our cushions softened up the perfect amount after a couple months of use.

Washable Everything: With kids and pets, this is non-negotiable. I can throw the covers in the wash and not stress about spills.

Timeless Style: The transitional design works beautifully in traditional, modern farmhouse, or cottagecore spaces.

Compact Size: Perfect for smaller living rooms or creating conversation areas.

Seasonal Versatility: Swapping slipcover colors completely changes the room’s mood.

The Not-So-Great Parts:

Shows Everything: The Natural color, while gorgeous, shows every speck of lint, pet hair, and dust. You’ll be washing it more frequently than darker colors.

Not a Sink-In Sofa: If you want something you can disappear into like a marshmallow, this isn’t it.

Fabric Attracts Lint: Keep a lint brush handy; you’ll need it.

Assembly Required: Obviously, but worth mentioning if you hate IKEA furniture builds.

Is the IKEA HYLTARP Worth the Hype?

After one year of real-life use, I can confidently say yes, absolutely.

These sofas have completely transformed how our family uses our living room. The space feels brighter, more intentional, and genuinely welcoming. Everyone gravitates toward this room now which, as a mom trying to create a cozy home, feels like the ultimate success.

At a fraction of the cost of a similar styled designer sofa, the HYLTARP delivers incredible value. You’re getting:

  • Quality construction that feels sturdy and well-made
  • A timeless design that won’t look dated
  • The flexibility of washable, interchangeable slipcovers
  • A size that works in most living spaces

Who Should (and Shouldn’t) Buy the HYLTARP

Perfect for:

  • Anyone wanting a Nancy Meyers/cottagecore aesthetic on a budget
  • Families who need washable furniture
  • People creating conversation areas or reading nooks
  • Those who love changing their decor seasonally

Maybe skip if:

  • You prefer ultra-soft, sink-in seating
  • You never want to think about washing slipcovers
  • You need a large sectional for movie nights

Do I Think the IKEA HYLTARP is a Good Buy?

The viral IKEA HYLTARP sofa isn’t just Instagram hype, it’s a genuinely well-designed piece of furniture that works beautifully in real homes with real families. One year in, I have zero regrets about this IKEA purchase. If you’re already browsing IKEA for living room furniture, you might also want to see my favourite new IKEA finds.

The ability to refresh the entire look with new slipcovers, the practical washability, and the timeless style make this sofa a winner in my book. For less than $2500 CAD (compared to at least $10,000 for similar designer sofas), I created the exact two-sofa living room layout I’d been dreaming about, and it’s held up to everything our busy family has thrown at it.
