How to make a DIY embroidered fall pillow from Dollar Tree tea towels

Materials:

  • 2 Dollar Tree plaid kitchen towels
  • Paper, computer, & printer to print embroidery design
  • Pencil
  • Painter’s or scotch tape
  • Embroidery floss
  • Embroidery needle
  • Sewing machine
  • Needle & thread

Directions:

Click on the image above to download a high-resolution version of this “grateful” design and print it onto an 8 1/2 x 11″ sheet of paper.

Pencil scrubbing on the backside of the paper.

Scribble some pencil over the reverse side of the print, just covering the letters.

The piece of paper is taped to the tea towel, and then the word grateful is traced.

Centre the print right-side-up on one of the kitchen towels and tape it in place. Trace over the letters with a pen or firm pencil to transfer the letters onto the towel.

The pencil scrubbing and tracing leave the word lightly on the tea towel.

Trace over the transferred letters with a pencil if you’d like them to be darker.

Christina is using embroidery floss and backstitch to embroider grateful onto the tea towel.

Using embroidery floss and an embroidery needle, use a back stitch to embroider over the pattern you’ve traced. Here’s how to back stitch.

The right sides of the tea towels are pinned together.

Pin the second kitchen towel to the first one, right sides together. Make sure you match all the plaid stripes for a consistent design.

The tea towels are sewn together with a sewing machine.

Sew the towels together around the perimeter, leaving a 12″ opening at the bottom of your pillow cover and a 1/2″ seam allowance.

A pillow form is stuffed into the tea towel pillow cover.

Clip the corners of your pillow cover and then turn it right-side-out. Stuff a 10″ x 20″ or a 12″ x 24″ pillow form inside your DIY pillow cover.

A blind stitch is used to sew the DIY fall pillow cover closed.

Use a blind stitch to sew the opening of the pillow cover shut.

Grateful is embroidered on a pillow made from Dollar Tree towels.

All done! You can wash your new fall pillow by hand (or use the hand wash setting on your washing machine) and lay it flat to dry.

  1. I absolutely love your DIYs!!! You make Dollar Tree products look high end and something I’d want to display in my home! I love them all, but my very favorites are the grateful pillow & the baby pumpkins are so sweet, but I really love them all. Keep them coming & can’t wait to see Halloween!!!

  2. I really live this idea, thanks for sharing! I am going to do this with only one modification. I am going to attach a few buttons on the bottom so it acts kind of like a duvet cover. This way I can use the same pillow insert with other tea towel cases seasonally.
