Ever feel like your home just doesn’t look quite right, even after you’ve spent time decorating it? You might be making a few common interior design mistakes without even realizing it. The good news? These are super easy to fix, and once you do, your space will feel more polished, more inviting, and a whole lot more you. Let’s walk through the top mistakes that can make a home look cheap, and how to turn things around on a budget.

We’ve all been there. You add something new to your space – maybe a rug, a light fixture, or a new piece of wall art – and instead of feeling like your home just stepped out of a designer’s portfolio, it feels… off. Or worse, a little cheap.
Don’t worry. It’s not your fault! Most of us haven’t been taught the “why” behind why some homes feel polished and expensive (even on a budget!) while others just miss the mark.
As a designer who’s worked on cozy cabins, client renos, and plenty of my own rooms over the years, I’ve seen the same sneaky mistakes pop up again and again. The good news? They’re all easy to fix once you know what to look for.
So let’s walk through 10 of the most common interior design mistakes that could be making your home look less-than-lovely… and what you can do to turn things around without spending a fortune!

1. Hanging Curtains Too Low
If your curtains are mounted right above the window frame or (eep!) directly on it, it’s visually shrinking your entire room.
Fix it: Hang your curtain rods high and wide. Mount them closer to the ceiling and at least 6–12 inches past the window frame. This draws the eye up and makes your space feel grander and more custom in an instant.

2. Choosing the Wrong Rug Size
A too-small rug is one of the fastest ways to make a room feel unfinished. It can actually make your furniture look like it’s floating.
Fix it: Go bigger. Living room rugs should allow at least the front legs of your sofas and chairs to sit on them. In bedrooms, your rug should come out from under the bed enough that it grounds the space. Don’t be afraid to size up or layer a smaller rug over a neutral base.

3. Ignoring Lighting Layers
If you’re relying solely on overhead lights, your room probably feels flat and harsh, especially at night.
Fix it: Add layers. Table lamps, sconces, pendant lights, and even under-cabinet strip lighting can make a space feel warm, inviting, and high-end. Bonus: You can find beautiful options on Amazon or secondhand for under $50.

4. Going Matchy-Matchy With Furniture
Buying everything from the same furniture set might seem like the “safe” option, but it often makes a room look sterile and dated.
Fix it: Mix materials and styles. Pair two wooden-armed accent chairs with an upholstered couch, or mix metal finishes for a collected, designer look. If your pieces feel coordinated, they don’t need to match exactly.

5. Cluttered Surfaces
Even beautiful decor loses its impact when every surface is packed. Too many little objects can make a space feel chaotic and cheap.
Fix it: Edit ruthlessly. Curate your shelves and tabletops with a mix of textures, heights, and intentional breathing room. Less really is more here.

6. Generic Artwork
Mass-produced canvas prints from big-box stores can sometimes feel impersonal and overused.
Fix it: Mix in art that means something. This could be thrifted pieces, printable downloads from Etsy, kids’ art in pretty frames, or black-and-white family photos. It doesn’t have to be expensive, it just needs to feel you.

7. Forgetting About Texture
A room with only smooth, flat surfaces (think leather, laminate, glass) can feel cold and uninspired.
Fix it: Layer in cozy textures like linen, boucle, woven baskets, or a chunky knit throw. This instantly adds depth and makes your home feel inviting. (Psst… this is a major part of my Cozy Formula!)

8. Using Short or Builder-Grade Shower Curtains
Tiny plastic curtains or default-height options from the big box store scream “basic bathroom.” Too-short shower curtains are one of the most common interior design mistakes I see!
Fix it: Hang an extra-long shower curtain higher up (almost like a window curtain!) to make the room feel taller and more luxurious. Even a plain white curtain in a waffle texture can look stunning (here’s the extra long one I used in our girls’ bathroom).

9. Pushing Furniture Up Against the Walls
It might seem like you’re creating more space, but it actually makes a room feel stiff and awkward.
Fix it: Float your furniture when you can. Even pulling your sofa 6–10 inches off the wall or angling a chair can make a room feel more intentional and high-end.

10. Neglecting the Entryway
First impressions matter. If your entry is cluttered or nonexistent, the whole home can feel chaotic.
Fix it: Create a simple drop zone with hooks or a shoe cabinet, a bench or chair, and a mirror or artwork. It doesn’t have to be big, just thoughtful. Bonus points if you add a candle or small lamp for a welcoming glow.

Most of these interior design mistakes are easy to fix, no reno required. And when you make just a few small changes, your home instantly starts to feel more pulled together, more expensive, and most importantly… more you.
