It’s no secret that I ADORE flowers and love adding them to my home decor in abundance in the spring. I wish I had an unlimited budget for designer fresh flowers. But, since I don’t, I enjoy playing with grocery store flowers and making them look more expensive.
This pink, boho-inspired floral arrangement was so fun to create. I used some simple tricks to make it with a few inexpensive stems I bought from my local florist.

I’ve learned a few tricks from one of my favourite floral designers Cory Christopher, and I’m sharing them with you today! Here are some tips for making grocery store flowers look gorgeous and expensive.

Choose flowers in a monochromatic or analogous colour scheme
What the heck does that mean?! This means buying different flowers that are all shades of the same colour or a couple of colours that are right beside each other on the colour wheel. You can read my post on colour schemes to see the colour wheel and get some ideas. These colour schemes will help make your floral arrangement look elegant and elevated.
Pick a cohesive color palette that includes a mix of focal flowers, filler flowers, and secondary flowers. For this one, I grabbed some tulips and mixed florals in shades of pinks and purples – analogous colours!

Use a unique vase in a gorgeous texture or colour
Then, placing your arrangement in a pretty vessel will instantly make your flowers look higher-end. Try a heavy glass vase, something textured, or even something unexpected like an antique crock, pitcher, or thrifted jug. You can find some of my favourite vases in my store, cozyprairielines.com. And, for a more casual arrangement, Mason jars also add charm.
For my pink-and-purple flower arrangement, I ended up using a large candle holder in a textured pink & gold colour combo.

Build a solid base
Then, use floral foam, chicken wire, or floral tape to create a sturdy grid inside your vessel. This helps support the stems and gives structure to your arrangement. This is especially important when working with larger flowers or asymmetrical designs.

Create a shape and group the same flowers together
After you fill your vase with water, start trimming and placing your flowers in the vase while keeping a finished shape in mind.
For this arrangement, I wanted to create a triangular shape. So, this meant making a taller line of flowers in the middle and shorter ones draping on each side. You could also create a circle or something more asymmetrical – use your creativity!
Another trick is to group similar flowers together to create clusters. I love how this looks! I grouped the mums, the light tulips, the dark tulips, and the carnations together in clusters rather than spreading them out over the whole arrangement.
This is such a gorgeous look. It reminds me of bouquets you might naturally make while gathering garden flowers, leaves, and herbs in a field.

Think in odd numbers
When placing your blooms, use odd numbers. This is a trick used by the pros to create a more natural look. For example, use 3, 5, or 7 of a type of flower when clustering blooms or succulents throughout your arrangement.

Add in dried or faux stems
Finally, sneaking in some dried stems, faux florals, or faux greenery can make your arrangement look fuller and more interesting on a budget.
I considered adding some faux eucalyptus stems to mine, but instead decided the light gold of the dried pampas grass stems was perfect because it went beautifully with the pinks of the flowers.
And perhaps most importantly, remember that you can reuse faux florals and dried stems over and over again! Try adding a bit of moss, some berries, or even a few sprigs of foliage for added texture.

Bonus tips!
- Fluff the petals gently with your hands to open the blooms a little more
- Take photos of your arrangements for Instagram or to inspire your next creation
- Be creative and arrange your flowers in bowls, pitchers, mason jars, or low vases for your kitchen table, coffee table, or dining table
- Don’t forget to tie it all together with ribbons or twine if gifting!
- You can find great faux or dried stems at places like Dollarama, Amazon, or your local craft shop. In other words, creativity doesn’t have to be expensive! These additions are perfect for mixing into simple arrangements when fresh flowers alone are too expensive or you can’t find the ones you want.
