Turn your existing pieces into magazine-worthy arrangements with these simple, proven techniques I’ve learned over the years as a DIY home stylist. Learn how to style your home with items you already have for a cozy & collected look you’l love!

One of my favourite styling formulas has always been The Rule of 3. It’s so easy to implement and it’s great for shelf styling!

Do you ever look at your home and think, “I have all these nice things, but somehow they just don’t look… right together”? You’re not alone. This is the #1 struggle I hear from readers: knowing how to arrange and style what you already own.

The good news? Styling isn’t about having the “right” stuff. It’s about knowing how to arrange what you have in ways that feel intentional, balanced, and beautiful. And once you learn these five foolproof formulas, you’ll never second-guess your decorating decisions again.

Ready to learn hot to style your home & make everything you own look like it belongs in a magazine? Let’s do it!

Why These Formulas Work

Before we jump into the specifics, here’s why formulas are game-changers: they take the guesswork out of styling. Instead of moving things around endlessly, hoping something clicks, you’ll have a clear roadmap for creating arrangements that work every single time.

Think of these as your styling safety net! Whether you’re working with thrift store finds, hand-me-downs, or pieces you’ve collected over the years, these formulas will make them all look intentional and beautiful together. I’ve learned all of these throughout my years as a DIY home stylist as I’ve decorated my own home, my vacation rentals, and rooms for friends, family and clients!

Formula #1: The Rule of Three (Triangle Method)

What it is: Group items in sets of three, arranging them in a triangular formation with varying heights.

How to use it:

  • Tall element: Lamp, vase with branches, candlestick, or stack of books
  • Medium element: Medium vase, framed photo, or decorative bowl
  • Short element: Small candle, succulent, or decorative object

Where to use it: Coffee tables, console tables, dressers, kitchen counters, bookshelves

Pro styling tip: The triangle doesn’t have to be perfect. Think of it as creating visual balance rather than exact geometry. Your eye should move naturally between the three points.

Real example: On your coffee table, try a tall white vase with eucalyptus branches, a medium ceramic bowl, and a small stack of books with a candle on top. Instant magazine styling!

Formula #2: The 60-30-10 Color Rule

What it is: Use three colors in your space with these proportions: 60% neutral base, 30% supporting color, 10% accent color.

How to use it:

  • 60% Neutral: Your walls, large furniture, and major textiles (think beiges, whites, grays)
  • 30% Supporting color: Accent furniture, curtains, area rugs, larger accessories
  • 10% Accent color: Throw pillows, artwork, candles, small decorative objects

Where to use it: Any room, any style. This works universally!

Pro styling tip: You probably already have these colors in your home! Look around and identify your dominant neutral, then find pieces in your secondary and accent colors to redistribute around the space.

Real example: If your room is mostly cream and beige (60%), add some navy blue pieces like pillows or a throw (30%), then pop in coral accents through candles, books, or a small vase (10%).

Formula #3: The Odd Numbers Rule

What it is: Group items in odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7) for the most pleasing arrangements. While The Rule of 3 is great for smaller vignettes and tabletops, The Odd Numbers Rule is handy when you have to style larger areas!

How to use it:

  • Single statement piece: One large artwork, one bold plant, one standout lamp
  • Groups of three: Most versatile and easiest to work with
  • Groups of five: Great for larger surfaces or bookshelves
  • Groups of seven: Perfect for gallery walls or long surfaces

Where to use it: Everywhere! Mantels, shelves, gallery walls, tabletops.

Pro styling tip: When you have an even number of similar items, try separating them or adding one more piece to create an odd grouping.

Real example: Instead of placing two matching candlesticks together, separate them and add a small plant or decorative bowl between them for a more dynamic, pleasing arrangement.

Formula #4: The High-Low Mix

What it is: Combine different price points, styles, and “fanciness levels” for a collected, authentic look.

How to use it:

  • High: Your investment pieces, antiques, or special finds
  • Low: Everyday items, DIY projects, or budget-friendly accessories
  • Mix them together: Don’t segregate expensive and inexpensive items

Where to use it: Throughout your entire home.

Pro styling tip: This formula prevents your space from looking too “matchy” or like everything came from the same store on the same day. Real homes evolve over time!

Real example: Pair your grandmother’s crystal vase with books from the library book sale and a candle from the grocery store. The mix of “fancy” and everyday creates authentic, lived-in charm. I also like to implement this for high-use pieces I want to invest in like sofas, quality bedding, sturdy dining tables, and statement light fixtures. Mix these higher-end pieces with more budget-friendly accessories.

Formula #5: The Layering Method

What it is: Create depth and interest by layering items at different levels—both vertically and horizontally.

How to use it:

  • Vertical layering: Stack books, place objects on top of books, vary heights with pedestals or risers
  • Horizontal layering: Overlap frames, layer rugs, drape throws casually
  • Mix both: Create complex, interesting arrangements that draw the eye in

Where to use it: Bookshelves, mantels, coffee tables, bedside tables, gallery walls

Pro styling tip: Don’t be afraid to lean artwork against the wall behind other objects, or to place smaller items in front of larger ones. Layering creates that “styled but not stuffy” look.

Real example: On a bookshelf, place books both vertically and horizontally, lean a small framed photo against the books, add a small plant in front, and include a decorative object on top of the horizontal books.

Can you see where I used layering, the rule of three (triangle method), and the odd numbers formula on my ottoman?

Putting It All Together: Your Styling Game Plan

Now that you know the formulas, here’s how to style your home with them:

1. Start Small

Pick one surface like a coffee table, dresser top, or bookshelf. Apply one formula and see how it feels before moving on.

2. Work with What You Have

Walk through your home and gather items that could work together. You’ll be surprised by what you already own! I move things from one room to another all the time.

3. Take Photos

Your camera lens will show you things your eye might miss. Take a photo (with your phone is great!), then adjust based on what you see. I don’t know why this works, but I find it so helpful every time!

4. Trust the Process

These formulas work because they’re based on how our brains naturally process visual information. Trust them, even if the arrangement feels different from what you’re used to.

Our Tiny Lake House kitchen renovation is one of my favourite ways I used the 60-30-10 colour formula. Can you spot the 3 dominant colours I used here?
