There’s something about velvet ribbon at Christmas: it’s soft, classic, and instantly makes your holiday décor look high-end. Whether you’re decorating your tree, styling garlands, or wrapping gifts, a double velvet bow adds that rich designer touch that looks like it came straight out of a boutique.

The best part? It’s surprisingly easy to make. You just need one strip of ribbon and two hands!
Today I’m showing you exactly how to tie a bow with velvet ribbon: the double-looped kind that looks full, fluffy, and expensive.

What You’ll Need
How to Tie a Double Velvet Bow

Step 1 — Cut your ribbon
Cut a 36″ length of velvet ribbon. Cut each end at an angle so the finished bow looks polished.

Step 2 — Start forming loops
Wrap one end of the ribbon three times around your pointer finger.

Then wrap the ribbon twice around both your pointer finger and thumb, holding them about 3–4 inches apart.
(The distance between your finger and thumb controls how big your bow will be.)

Step 3 — Secure the center
Take the loose end of the ribbon and wrap it around the middle of the loops.

Bring it back through itself and pull gently to tighten.

This forms the center knot and locks everything in place.

Step 4 — Shape the bow
Slide the bow off your fingers.
Uncurl the first end, fluff the loops, and adjust until it looks full and even.

You’re done! And you now have the most gorgeous double velvet bow.

Where to Use Your Velvet Bows
This bow looks beautiful on:
- Christmas tree ornaments
- Wreaths and garlands
- Gift wrapping
- Stockings
- Mantel garlands
- Bottle brush displays
- Holiday tablescapes
They instantly elevate any décor into that cozy, elegant designer look.

A Quick Tip
When tying velvet ribbon, make sure the velvet side faces outward on the final loop. If the ribbon starts to twist, rotate it gently as you pull to keep the texture showing.
