Have you ever been little hesitant about making something, but then after you decided to give it a shot and see what happens, you were happily surprised with the results? That’s how I felt about this DIY outdoor sofa! I hadn’t ever built outdoor furniture, but when I stumbled across these easy outdoor couch building plans from Ana White, I knew they’d be simple enough for me to try. Let me show you how to build a beautiful, rustic outdoor sofa out of 2x4s and with basic tools!

You Will Need:
- 2×4 cedar boards, spruce boards, or pine lumber
- wood screws
- wood stain, polyurethane sealant or outdoor paint
- miter saw
- measuring tape
- drill & drill bit (drill bit if you want to drill small pilot holes prior to using screws)
- 100 grit sandpaper
- metal brackets
- exterior wood glue (optional)

Instructions
To begin this project, download this free PDF materials list, cut list and instructions by Ana White. If you love free plans for building fun & simple woodworking projects, Ana White’s site is my favourite!
I like that this particular DIY outdoor sofa plan doesn’t require any more advanced woodworking techniques like pocket holes (no Kreg Jig required). It’s a good one if you’re a beginner woodworker like I am.
Next, pick up your lumber. I used cedar 2x4s so that this sofa would weather well outside. You’ll also need deck screws, a drill, a cross-cut saw, stain (if desired), and brackets (if desired – I used these instead of pocket screws as called for in the plans).

Next, follow the directions in the downloaded PDF to build your sofa. You can also watch Ana’s helpful video, below:
I stained my couch frame & seat slats with Minwax’s Ebony wood stain before I attached the slat supports to my sofa. You can give your sofa a light sand before staining, painting or sealing it to give it a nicely finished look and feel.

Finish off your DIY outdoor sofa with some outdoor back cushion & seat cushions (I found relatively budget-friendly outdoor cushions at IKEA online, or you could sew some) and some decorative throw pillows.

Ain’t she a beaut?! I’m so proud of this simple little DIY outdoor couch and I love its rustic modern look! I used this for a deck project for Brookfield Residential, and here’s how it looks in the completed space.
This would also look beautiful on a front porch or back porch, or you could make two for a large back patio.
